Based on the ruling of Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court, Mehdi Yarrahi sentenced to 2 years in prison and 74 lashes. Previously, he had been temporarily released on bail of 15 billion tomans.
According to the Iranian Human Rights Society, on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, the Revolutionary Court published its verdict regarding Mehdi Yarahi.
The verdict issued by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, Mehdi Yarahi sentenced to a total of 2 years of imprisonment and 74 lashes. According to Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, one year of his prison sentence is enforceable.
Mehdi Yarrahi previously released on bail of 15 billion tomans by one of his friends temporarily.
Mehdi Yarrahi arrested on August 25, 2023, for performing his new protest song called “Your Scarf”. The arrest warrant signed by the Tehran prosecutor. On the same day, the Mizan news agency, affiliated with the judiciary, reported the formation of a legal case against Mehdi Yarrahi. The curt accused him for publication of a “illegal and against the morals and customs of the Islamic society” song.
After Mehdi Yarrahi’s arrest, his Instagram page also became unavailable.
Mehdi Yarrahi is an Iranian singer and songwriter. Some of his songs banned by the government officials due to their protest nature. In December 2018, he detained for wearing workers’ clothing during a concert in support of labor protests and temporarily banned from working.
“Mahdi Yarahi has shown a reaction to the problems of the people by singing protest songs. These reactions accompanied by expressing opinions and social activities. The people of Khuzestan suffering from social problems such as unemployment, poor living conditions, and drought for years. By singing protest songs, he expressed his protest against these problems.”
