Execution of prisoners in Iran’s Zanjan and Ahr prisons

The execution of prisoners in Iran, including recent cases in Zanjan and Ahar, raises serious human rights concerns. In July 2025 alone, 23 prisoners faced the death penalty, averaging two executions daily.

Iran Human Rights Society- July 2, 2025- Reports confirm 23 prisoners faced execution in the Tir Persian month. This means at least two executions occur daily.

Execution of Jabbar Pourmohammadi Moghan in Zanjan Prison

On the morning of July 2, 2025, Jabbar Pourmohammadi Moghan faced execution in Zanjan Prison. He was 40 years old. Authorities arrested him three years ago for drug-related charges.

Execution of Hossein-Ali Abedi in Ahr Prison

At dawn on July 2, 2025, Hossein-Ali Abedi faced execution in Ahar Prison. He was 25 years old. Previously, authorities charged him with rape and sentenced him to death.

Conflict with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states everyone has the right to life. No one should face deprivation of this right, except through a competent court’s ruling for a legally recognized crime. However, the execution of prisoners directly contradicts this principle. The death penalty removes the fundamental right to life. Additionally, irreversible judicial errors cannot be corrected. Some execution methods also qualify as torture, violating human rights standards. Therefore, these practices breach international law.

Violations of International Human Rights Commitments

Under Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which Iran signed, executions require fair trials and apply only to severe crimes. However, many cases lack transparency and independent courts. Defendants often face restricted legal rights. Consequently, these executions violate global human rights standards. Moreover, the lack of judicial fairness undermines Iran’s international obligations. This pattern demands urgent attention from human rights advocates.
