“Abbas Deris, one of the detainees from November 2019, sentenced to 14 years in prison.”
According to the Iranian Human Rights Society, on Wednesday, December 13, 2023. Abbas Deris, who previously sentenced to death, sentenced to 14 years in prison by the third branch of the criminal court of a province in Khuzestan, of which 10 years are enforceable.
Ms. Fereshteh Tabanian, Abbas Deris’ lawyer, published this news on her personal page and wrote: “Abbas Deris sentenced to 14 years in prison on charges of intentional murder and possession of weapons by the third branch of the criminal court in a province in Khuzestan. They have considered the verdict as their own knowledge.” She also stated that they objected to this verdict and Mr. Deris not involved in the murder.
Ms. Tabanian continued on the same page: “There is no confession or evidence indicating that my client involved in this incident. The retrial for the death sentence of my client, Abbas Deris, is still pending in the Supreme Court. I hope that this unjust sentence will be overturned.”
Accusation of Abbas Deris
Abbas and Mohsen Deris arrested on December 8, 2019, after the violent attack by security forces on people in, Mahshahr. The reason for their arrest and accusation was “carrying weapons and involvement in the murder of Reza Sayyadi.” Reza Sayyadi one of the special forces in Mahshahr who was killed that day.
On November 19, 2019, during nationwide protests in Iran, security forces shot at protesting people in Mahshahr. Resulting in the deaths of a large number of people and one special forces officer named Reza Sayyadi.
Abbas Deris has three children aged 6, 14, and 16. He subjected to torture during interrogation for forced confession.
The first hearing of the Abbas Daris Court held on May 5 on the allegations of “Moharebeh” and “disrupting public order” through a conference video.
The second court session held on Thursday, September 13, 2022, by the Revolutionary Court in Mahshahr prison.
On October 22, 2023, Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court in Mahshahr County sentenced him to death.
According to Ms. Tabanayan, Abbas Deris’ lawyer, he transferred from Sepidar prison in Ahvaz to Mahshahr prison at his own request.
” Abbas’s brother, Mohsen Deris arrested in December 2019. And released on bail in November 2023, after about four years in prison. He sentenced to two years in prison for the charges of complicity in murder and possession of weapons.”
