Political prisoner Hashem Khastar, who is 70 years old, is imprisoned in Ward 6/1 of Vakil Abad Prison in Mashhad. On May 25, 2023, he was tried online in a court on charges of “propaganda against the regime” and “insulting Khamenei and Khomeini”.
This case has been opened against him by the Ministry of Information and the reason for it has been announced that he sent a message outside the prison.
A part of Mr. Khastar’s letter to the people of Iran reads as follows:
“Heroic nation of Iran
Freedom-loving educators and teachers,
As you know, last time the ruling regime arrested me along several other people without any reason on August 11, 2019. During this time, they put so much pressure on me that they even took away the possibility of using the phone for months, And if I wanted to make a call, someone above me would control me.
I explained to the judge the story of the Great French Revolution that took place about 250 years ago and said: the intellectuals of that time in France such as Voltaire, Montesquieu, Jean-Jacques Rousseau… They themselves had no idea how their writings would inform the people and It leads to revolution.
For 2 years, the people advised the King of France, Louis XVI, to correct his behavior and action, but Louis XVI again conspired against the people and sought to suppress the revolutionaries, until the people cut off the heads of Louis XVI and his wife with guillotines. The French Revolution created an explosion in the whole of Europe and moved everything from feudalism to the bourgeoisie.
As a result, I told the judge that it was the performance of Louis XVI that caused the revolution. Even now, it is the malpractice of the system that is leading the country to the revolution. I said that these are the last days of your system, don’t think that you can continue to rule.
My writings, which you considered a crime. Are a road map to achieve democracy and that the revolution should not deviate after democracy. Because we had two revolutions, both of them deviated. Therefore, my writings are lesson of love that I learned from nation and now I am returning it to nation. The articles I wrote are a document of history.
I told the judge that with this trial, you reminded the people of my writings and words again. The people will ask what Khastar said that they are trying him in prison? I even told the judge: If you keep me in prison for another ten years or if you give me a death sentence, I have no regrets. The Ministry of Information also knows that I have said my words in any situation. Because I am a 71-year-old teacher, and my writings and statements are based on a scientific and realistic analysis.
I give good news to heroic nation of Iran, the dark days will pass and the spring of freedom come.
Hashem Khastar, representative of Iran’s free teachers
Vakil Abad prison in Mashhad
