Youssef Savari faces critical health decline in Sheiban Prison

Youssef Savari faces critical health decline in Sheiban Prison due to denied medical care for lung disease. Urgent calls for transfer grow amid prison abuses.

Tuesday, September 23, 2025, the Iran Human Rights Society – Youssef Savari endures a severe health crisis in Sheiban Prison. Authorities deny him vital medical care. This political prisoner’s lung condition worsens daily. Families and activists demand immediate action. Discover how systemic neglect threatens his life and exposes Iran’s prison abuses.

What Triggers Youssef Savari’s Transfer to Sheiban Prison?

On January 29, 2024, officials summoned Youssef Savari to Branch 8 of the Ahvaz Revolutionary Court’s Enforcement Office. They transferred him straight to Sheiban Prison. There, authorities began enforcing his six-year sentence. This move reignited his long battle with the justice system. However, his health now hangs in the balance. Prison conditions only accelerate the decline.

How Does Youssef Savari’s Health Crisis Unfold?

Political Prisoner Youssef Savari

On September 23, 2025, reports reveal Youssef Savari’s critical state in Ward 5 of Sheiban Prison, Ahvaz. Sources close to his family describe multiple severe shortness of breath attacks in recent days. He cannot sleep or lie down without suffocation. Despite urgent pleas, prison officials refuse to transfer him to an outside hospital. Therefore, his lung disease spirals unchecked. This denial exemplifies deliberate medical deprivation for political prisoners.

Who Speaks Out on Youssef Savari’s Critical Condition?

Isa Savari, Youssef’s brother, shares alarming details in interviews with news agencies. “Youssef suffers from a lung disease,” he explains. “In recent days, his respiratory condition has severely worsened. He experiences suffocation when lying down.” The family repeatedly requests external medical facilities. Yet, authorities deny these pleas for unknown reasons. Human rights groups like HRANA News Agency confirm the severity. Avatoday reports echo the ongoing treatment denial. Consequently, Youssef’s condition turns “severely critical.”

What Led to Youssef Savari’s Arrest and Harsh Sentencing?

Youssef Savari, son of Mehdi and born in 1988, supports a wife and three children. He hails from the Abu Hamiza area of Khafajiyeh city. IRGC Intelligence forces arrested him on November 8, 2018, in Khafajiyeh. They subjected him to months of torture in the IRGC Imam Ali detention center in Ahvaz. Judges convicted him of “propaganda against the Islamic Republic of Iran” and “association with hostile groups.” He received a one-year prison sentence and a four-year suspended term. After one and a half years of uncertainty in Sheiban Prison, he posted 500 million toman bail and left in March 2020.

However, the Ahvaz Revolutionary Court amended his ruling in July 2023. They imposed six years of imprisonment and four years suspended. Branch 17 of the Appeals Court upheld this decision. Thus, on January 29, 2024, summons led to his re-imprisonment. Now, health woes compound his plight.

Why Does Denied Treatment Threaten Youssef Savari’s Life?

Informed sources highlight prior concerns about Youssef Savari’s health. They view this medical deprivation as a blatant rights violation. Continuing this pattern risks irreversible damage. It endangers not just Youssef but other political prisoners in Sheiban Prison, Ahvaz. Reports link such denials to rising deaths from chronic illnesses. Respiratory issues, in particular, prove fatal without care. Therefore, urgent intervention becomes essential to avert tragedy.

What Plagues Sheiban Prison’s Living Conditions?

Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz ranks among Iran’s most infamous facilities. Reports detail filthy sanitary conditions and inadequate medical setups. Officials exert constant pressure on political prisoners. Many, including Youssef Savari, beg for external treatment transfers. Guards routinely ignore these calls. Ward 5, meant for 100 inmates, crams over 125 political prisoners. This overcrowding spreads diseases rapidly. It sparks a full health crisis. Inmates threaten hunger strikes in protest.

Furthermore, the prison holds over 5,000 people against a 3,500 capacity. Basic medical services vanish. Unhygienic food fuels gastrointestinal and viral outbreaks. Consequently, prisoners like Youssef face compounded suffering.

How Does Youssef Savari’s Case Violate Human Rights?

Youssef Savari’s ordeal spotlights systematic human rights abuses in Iran. Officials intentionally withhold medical care. Harsh conditions and psychological pressures erode basic dignity. These actions breach key international standards:

  • Right to Life (Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights): Treatment denial directly imperils the prisoner’s survival.
  • Prohibition of Torture (Article 5 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights): Medical neglect amounts to cruel, physical, and psychological torment.
  • Access to Medical Care (Article 12 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights): Ignoring health needs shatters this fundamental entitlement.

Such violations demand global scrutiny and reform.

What Do Families and Activists Demand for Youssef Savari?

Youssef Savari’s family presses Sheiban Prison and Ahvaz Revolutionary Court officials hard. They insist on immediate hospital transfer. Continued denial, they warn, spells mortal danger. This mirrors ordeals of other political prisoners across Iranian facilities. Human rights groups like the Iran Human Rights Monitor label it a “systematic pattern.” They urge swift international focus. Activists rally for accountability. Only pressure can secure Youssef’s care and expose broader prison failures.
