Execution of a Prisoner in Tabriz Central Prison

The number of prisoners executed in Iran since the past 17 days reached 85, averaging five executions per day.

Iran Human Rights Society, June 6, 2025 – A prisoner was executed in Tabriz Central Prison. As a result, the number of prisoners executed in Iran since the past 17 days reached 85, averaging five executions per day.

Execution of Gholli Faramarzi in Tabriz Prison

On the morning of Tuesday, June 3, 2025, Gholli Faramarzi was executed in Tabriz Central Prison. He was 50 years old, son of Timour, married, a father of two, and a resident of Golpashin village in Urmia. Faramarzi was arrested five years ago on drug-related charges and sentenced to death.

Violation of Human Rights Commitments Regarding the Death Penalty

Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights explicitly states: “Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person.” This right is absolute and cannot be deprived except through a verdict issued by a competent court for a crime recognized as such under the law. The death penalty, as the ultimate punishment, directly contradicts this article for the following reasons:

Right to Life: The right to life is a fundamental and inalienable right. The death penalty inherently violates this right by taking a person’s life.

Irreversibility: Once executed, a death sentence cannot be undone, even in cases of judicial error.

Torture and Inhumane Treatment: Certain methods of execution are considered forms of torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment, which violate the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Furthermore, under Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), to which Iran is a signatory, the imposition and execution of the death penalty are only permissible with full guarantees of a fair trial and for the most serious crimes. In many similar cases, the lack of transparency, restrictions on defendants’ legal rights, and issuance of sentences in courts lacking necessary independence are considered violations of this fundamental human rights principle.

The execution of Gholli Faramarzi, alongside the alarming rate of executions in Iran, highlights ongoing concerns about the systematic use of the death penalty and its incompatibility with international human rights standards.
