Amirhossein Hatami, one of the detainees of the December 2025 protests, was executed after being transferred to solitary confinement; reports indicate a hasty trial process and confessions obtained under pressure
Iran Human Rights Society, Thursday, April 2, 2026 – According to the Mizan News Agency, Amirhossein Hatami, one of the detainees of the December 2025 protests, was executed at dawn on Thursday, April 2, 2026. This execution took place after his transfer to solitary confinement in Qezelhesar Prison and under conditions where several other political prisoners had previously been executed.
Amirhossein Hatami; Transfer to solitary confinement before execution
At dawn on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, Amirhossein Hatami along with several other political prisoners was transferred to solitary confinement in Qezelhesar Prison. Mohammadamin Biglari, Shahin Vahedparast Kolour, Abolfazl Salehi Siavashani, and Ali Fahim were among the prisoners who were transferred to solitary confinement at the same time as Amirhossein Hatami.
This transfer occurred after the execution of four political prisoners Babak Alipour, Pouya Ghabadi, Akbar Daneshvarkar, and Mohammad Taghavi and increased concerns about the implementation of execution sentences for other prisoners. Finally, at dawn on Thursday, April 2, 2026, the execution sentence of Amirhossein Hatami was carried out.
Documents of the case and confessions obtained under pressure
Reports indicate that the documents relied upon in Amirhossein Hatami’s case faced serious ambiguities and parts of the case were prepared based on confessions obtained under pressure and in interrogation conditions. According to informed sources, the confessions were taken while the accused was under pressure, and this has created doubts about the validity of these confessions.
According to these reports, the documents presented in court also faced objections and some of the case documents had been challenged.
Trial process and issuance of the verdict
Based on the published information, the handling of Amirhossein Hatami’s case was carried out at a high speed and the time interval between the various stages of the proceedings was short. Some reports have described this process as hasty and outside the usual judicial procedure.
Reports also show that the trial process of this case was accompanied by legal defects and some stages of the proceedings were carried out quickly.
Executions in the shadow of war
Amirhossein Hatami’s execution was carried out while the country is in a state of war and under bombardment. Previously, the execution of several other political prisoners had also taken place in the same prison.
Diana Eltahawy, Deputy Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa at Amnesty International, in reaction to the recent executions, had stated that the authorities must immediately stop any plans to execute prisoners. She referred to the names of several prisoners including Amirhossein Hatami and warned that these individuals are facing the danger of execution.
In this statement, it was emphasized that continuing executions while people are involved in war and bombardment shows that the death penalty is still being used as a tool to deal with opponents.
The coincidence of war and the implementation of execution sentences has led some observers to consider this situation as a sign of continued domestic repression in wartime conditions. According to these observers, while the war continues, dealing with protesters and opponents continues and executions are also carried out within this framework.
Human rights violations with the execution of Amirhossein Hatami
Amirhossein Hatami’s execution was carried out while there are reports about the trial process, the manner of obtaining confessions, and the case documents. Carrying out the execution sentence in such conditions has created concerns about respecting the rights of the accused.
- Violation of the right to life – Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:
- The death penalty, as deprivation of the right to life, is recognized by many human rights institutions as a violation of the fundamental right to life.
- Violation of the prohibition of torture – Article 5 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:
- Obtaining confessions under pressure and holding in solitary confinement can be considered an example of inhuman and degrading treatment and a form of torture.
- Violation of the right to a fair trial – Article 10 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:
- Hasty handling of the case and the use of confessions obtained under pressure can violate the principles of fair trial and the right of the accused to defense.
- Violation of human dignity – Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:
- Treating the accused in a way that limits the possibility of effective defense and access to a fair trial process is in contradiction with the principle of human dignity.
