Iran executed 97 prisoners in past two weeks

Iran executed 97 prisoners in past two weeks, including Mohammad Ali Gholizadeh, one in Lordegan, and Shahriar Dahwari, highlighting human rights violations.

Iran Human Rights Society, Tuesday, September 9, 2025 – Executions in Iran reached a grim milestone in past two weeks, with 97 prisoners killed, averaging over four executions daily. On September 7 and 8, 2025, authorities executed three prisoners in Malayer, Lordegan, and Babolsar prisons. These cases, reported by the Iran Human Rights Society, expose the regime’s reliance on the death penalty, often for murder charges, amid widespread human rights concerns.

Mohammad Ali Gholizadeh Executed in Malayer Prison

Shahriar Dahwari

On September 8, 2025, Mohammad Ali Gholizadeh faced execution in Malayer Prison. Arrested for murder, he received a death sentence. The lack of transparency in his trial raises questions about judicial fairness. Malayer Prison has become a frequent site for executions, with reports noting at least 10 prisoners killed there since March 2025.

Unnamed Prisoner Executed in Lordegan Prison

On the same day, Lordegan Prison executed an unnamed prisoner. The Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor of Lordegan County cited murder as the charge. However, authorities withheld the prisoner’s identity, a common practice that obscures accountability. This secrecy fuels concerns about unfair trials and violations of due process in Iran’s judicial system.

Shahriar Dahwari Executed in Babolsar Prison

On September 7, 2025, Shahriar (Ahmad) Dahwari, son of Khatam from Saravan, was executed in Babolsar Prison. Arrested in 2023 for murder, he faced a death sentence. His execution reflects Iran’s pattern of targeting individuals from marginalized regions like Sistan and Baluchestan, often without adequate legal representation or transparent proceedings.

Death Penalty Violates Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The death penalty in Iran contradicts Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees the right to life, liberty, and security. Executions in Iran violate this principle because:

  • Right to Life: The death penalty strips away this fundamental right.
  • Irreversibility: Judicial errors cannot be undone, risking innocent lives.
  • Inhumane Treatment: Execution methods often amount to torture, breaching human rights standards. These violations highlight the regime’s disregard for international norms, drawing global condemnation.

Breaching International Human Rights Obligations

Iran, a signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), violates Article 6, which restricts the death penalty to the most serious crimes with strict fair trial safeguards. In cases like those in Malayer, Lordegan, and Babolsar, opaque judicial processes, limited legal access, and courts lacking independence undermine these obligations. Human rights groups report that Iran executed 841 people by August 28, 2025, with minimal transparency.

A Growing Human Rights Crisis

The 97 executions in September 2025, averaging one every six hours, signal an escalating crisis. Prisons like Malayer, Lordegan, and Babolsar are central to this surge. The regime’s use of the death penalty, often for vaguely defined charges, aims to suppress dissent and instill fear. Yet, movements like Tuesdays Against Execution show growing resistance, with families and activists demanding an end to this practice.
