These four prisoners transferred to quarantine on Monday, December 4, 2023, in preparation for their execution.
The names of the executed prisoners Sasan Maleki, Mehdi Moradi, Manouchehr Barzegar Gizh Rood, and Mojtaba Amiri. Mehdi Moradi from Arak, Mojtaba Amiri from Harsin, and Manouchehr Barzegar Gizh Rood from Delfan. They all convicted of drug-related offenses and sentenced to death.
Why there are many executions in Iran
Execution is a form of punishment and the harshest penalty for the convicted. Currently, most countries in the world have abolished the death penalty, and those countries that still have this form of punishment in their laws refrain from issuing or carrying out such sentences except in rare cases.
The death penalty is legal in Iran, and it imposed in judicial rulings for certain crimes such as political offenses, murder, rape, child sexual abuse, homosexuality, drug trafficking, armed robbery, kidnapping, and terrorism. The execution of the death penalty in Iran used under the rule of the dictatorship of the Supreme Leader to increase suppression.
Historically, execution has been a tool of power and dictatorship to intimidate and subdue people. The dictatorship ruling Iran using the tool of execution for over forty years to create fear and establish its permanent rule, because refraining from using the tool of execution and repression means the destruction of the system of the Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist. 104 countries have abolished the death penalty through referendums.
50 countries have abolished this method of death and 6 countries only use execution during wartime. Currently, only 34 or 36 countries use this inhumane punishment. Iran ranking second in terms of the number of executions per year among these countries and first in terms of the proportion of the population executed in the world!
