According to the Iranian Human Rights Society, on the morning of Monday, January 8, 2024, two prisoners executed in GhezelHesar prison in Karaj. The charges against these prisoners are related to drugs. The names of these prisoners are Mohammad Hossein Garavand and Kiyomarth Gholami. These prisoners transferred from unit 2 of this prison to solitary confinement on Sunday, 7th of January to execute their sentence.

Execution as a tool of dictator’s rule

Historically, execution has been used as a tool by the powerful and dictators to intimidate and subdue the people. The dictatorship ruling Iran for the past 40 years has consistently used execution to instill fear and maintain its grip on power. Abstaining from execution and suppression means the destruction of the current oppressive regime.

Currently, only 34 countries still use the inhumane punishment of execution. Under the rule of fundamentalist leaders, Iran ranks second in terms of the number of executions and first in terms of executions per capita.

Abandoning the death penalty in 104 countries

Currently, 104 countries have set aside the death penalty through referendums. 50 countries have abolished methods leading to death, and 6 countries will only have the death penalty during wartime.

Many executions are not reported due to news censorship, especially those involving women.

The high number of executions of prisoners in Iran has resulted in negative global reactions. Mr. Javid Rahman condemned the deprivation of citizens’ right to access a lawyer in his periodic report.
