March 8th and Evin Women’s Prison: A Symbol of Repression Against women Prisoners in Iran
Violated Rights of Women in Iran – List of Female Political Prisoners in Evin Prison
On the occasion of International Women’s Day, March 8th
On the occasion of International Women’s Day, March 8, we honor the brave female political prisoners who are imprisoned in Evin Prison, Iran.
Evin Women’s Prison, located in the northwestern part of Tehran near the Evin district, is one of the regime’s most notorious detention centers for suppressing female political prisoners. Dating back to the 1980s, this prison has become a hub for torture, deprivation, and systematic violations of the rights of dissident women.
In the women’s ward, more than ten political prisoners over the age of 60 are being held, with some exceeding 70 years of age. One of them, Rahele Rahimi-Pour, a member of the justice-seeking families, is imprisoned at the age of 72 simply for her efforts to uncover the truth and demand justice.
The physical condition of these prisoners in briefly
The physical condition of these prisoners is critical. Many suffer from severe and incurable illnesses such as multiple sclerosis (MS), cancer, brain tumors, and diabetes, yet the regime, instead of providing essential medical care, has subjected them to further pressure by depriving them of basic healthcare services.
Among these prisoners, Varisheh Moradi and Pakhshan Azizi have been sentenced to death, while Forough Taghipour and Marzieh Farsi have received 15-year prison sentences, and seven others have been condemned to 10 years of imprisonment. These harsh sentences highlight the regime’s brutal repression and its relentless attempt to silence opposition voices.
Some of these women, such as Azar Korvandi Mousazadeh, Zahra Safaei, and Moloud Safaei, are survivors of the brutal crackdowns of the 1980s. Azar Korvandi Mousazadeh and Zahra Safaei are also witnesses to the 1988 mass execution of political prisoners, and despite their past suffering, they continue to be imprisoned today for their unwavering commitment to their ideals.
A significant number of these women are mothers, with some, such as Shiva Esmaeili and Zahra Safaei, having been arrested alongside their children. They are forced to endure inhumane conditions, and their children face severe psychological and physical pressures within prison walls. The regime has not only denied these women their freedom but has also subjected their children to relentless suffering in captivity.
Additionally, seven imprisoned Sunni women, including one Afghan citizen, two Tajik citizens, one Indian citizen, and one Jordanian citizen, are held in isolated cells under dire and inhumane conditions. Two of these women gave birth to their children in prison, yet they are deprived of basic medical care, hygiene, and proper nutrition for their newborns. They are even denied the right to visit their families.
72 female political prisoners in Evin Prison
The plight of these 72 female political prisoners in Evin Prison represents only a fraction of the crimes committed by the regime against freedom-seeking women. The authorities not only suppress freedom of expression and basic civil rights but also systematically target women in an attempt to stifle protest movements. However, these women, through their resilience and resistance, have become symbols of the struggle for freedom and justice in Iran.
