Iran's Supreme Court halts execution of political prisoner Mohammad Javad Vafaei-Sani after torture-forced confessions

Iran’s Supreme Court halts execution of political prisoner Mohammad Javad Vafaei-Sani after torture-forced confessions and repeated death sentences from 2019 protests.

Iran Human Rights Society, Tuesday, October 7, 2025 –Iran’s Supreme Court acts decisively. Branch 37 overturns Mohammad Javad Vafaei-Sani’s death sentence for the third time. They order a halt to its implementation. This decision follows intense judicial ping-pong. Previously, Branch 9 under Judge Mazinani upheld the sentence. However, public outcry and advocacy efforts force this reversal. Mohammad Javad Vafaei-Sani, a 30-year-old political prisoner, sits in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad. He faces limbo now. Authorities communicate only the suspension so far. Therefore, his fight continues.

Informed sources reveal key details. Security forces arrested him during the nationwide November 2019 protests. They detained him in Mashhad in February 2020. Agents charged him with “corruption on earth” via “arson and destruction of specific sites, including the government Tezkrat building.” Branch 4 of the Mashhad Revolutionary Court sentenced him to death soon after. Yet, the Supreme Court first overturned this verdict. They sent the case back to Branch 2 for retrial. That branch ignored flaws and reissued death. After appeals, Branch 3 reviewed it third time. Regrettably, they sentenced him again. Now, Branch 37 steps in.

Torture’s Lasting Scars: Forced Confessions Under Duress

Mohammad Javad Vafaei-Sani suffers greatly. He endures severe physical and psychological torture in his first two years of detention. Torturers force confessions against him. However, he never accepts these charges. He repeatedly stresses that pressure and coercion extract his words. Sources close to his family confirm this nightmare. Human rights activists condemn the process fiercely. They call repeated death sentences a blatant fair trial violation. Moreover, they label it outright torture. The latest overturn by Branch 37 stems from public pressure. His family and organizations follow up relentlessly. Therefore, this halt signals hope amid despair.

Champion in Chains: Mohammad Javad Vafaei-Sani’s Background

Seyyed Mohammad Javad Vafaei-Sani shines as a boxing champion from Mashhad’s academies. Born in 1995, he inspires many. Yet, the IRGC shatters his life. They arrest him in March 2020 after the November 2019 protests. He faces 65 days of brutal physical and psychological torture. On January 9, 2022, his attorney Dr. Babak Paknia announces the grim news. Judge Mansouri in Branch 4 of the Mashhad Revolutionary Court sentences him to death. The charge: “corruption on earth” through “intentional arson and destruction of specific sites, including the government Tezkrat building.”

The saga drags on. In December 2022, Branch 9 of the Supreme Court overturns the sentence. They refer it back for retrial. On July 19, 2023, the prison’s supervising judge visits his ward. He informs Mohammad Javad Vafaei-Sani that his death sentence becomes final. Then, on August 1, 2023, Branch 2 strikes again. They sentence him to death once more. His attorney vows to appeal within legal limits. Fast forward to June 7, 2024. Branch 9 rejects the death penalty again. They send the case to another branch.

Dr. Babak Paknia shares updates on X. He writes: “Branch 9 of the Supreme Court has, for the second time, rejected the death sentence of Mohammad Javad Vafaei-Sani. Without considering the original verdict as insistent, they refer the case back to a parallel branch for retrial.” However, recent developments twist the narrative. On October 4, 2025, Branch 9 upholds the sentence despite flaws. Paknia notes third-party interference in trials. He urges the judiciary head’s inspectors to intervene urgently. This back-and-forth exposes systemic bias. Ethnic minorities and protesters suffer most.

Broader Crisis: Iran’s Execution Surge Targets Dissenters

Mohammad Javad Vafaei-Sani’s case highlights Iran’s repression. The regime wields death penalties to crush protests. From 2019 unrest to today’s strikes, authorities intimidate all. Teachers, workers, and students unite against this terror. Human rights groups track the horror. In 2025 alone, executions hit over 1,000 in nine months—a 30-year record. Drug charges claim half, but political cases spike too. UN experts decry the “industrial scale” killings. They violate the right to life.

Activists demand global action. Families like Vafaei-Sani’s plead for intervention. The Supreme Court’s halt buys time. Yet, without fair trials, justice remains elusive. Pressure mounts from within and abroad. Therefore, voices grow louder. They echo: End torture. Stop executions. Free political prisoners. Mohammad Javad Vafaei-Sani’s resilience fuels this fire. His story unites the oppressed. Change brews, one overturned sentence at a time.
