Wakilabad prison in Mashhad; violation of dignity and health of 3,500 female prisoners

Wakilabad prison in Mashhad; violation of dignity and health of 3,500 female prisoners

Political prisoners severely isolated by the prison chief’s orders to prevent them from communicating with other inmates.

In Wakilabad prison, political female prisoners deprived of any telephone contact.

The women’s section in Wakilabad prison has practically become an exile place for female prisoners, where sanitary, nutritional, and welfare conditions are extremely inadequate, and prisoners are in a state of despair. Despite the limited capacity, this prison holds at least 3,500 women, many of whom face basic shortages such as access to clean drinking water, proper nutrition, and minimal sanitary facilities.

The poor quality of food and inadequate rationing create multiple physical problems for the inmates. Furthermore, overcrowding, lack of sufficient space, and inadequate medical attention make the conditions unbearable for female prisoners. The lack of facilities has led to severe physical and psychological issues for the inmates.

Reports indicate that some of these women held without a clearly defined charge and merely for political or social reasons. The absence of basic human standards in this section has increased protests, but prisoners’ requests for improving conditions usually ignored. In such circumstances, female inmates not only face imprisonment and deprivation of freedom but also struggle daily with threats to their health and human dignity.

The total number of women’s halls in Wakilabad prison

The total number of women’s halls in Wakilabad prison consists of various sections referred to as “halls,” which are divided as follows:

Upper section with 13 rooms

Lower section with 13 rooms (each section has 4 rooms for new arrivals as quarantine)

Juvenile section, which is a large hall

Chief Women’s section, which is a large hall

Mother’s section, which has 8 rooms

Political section, which is a large hall

Each hall contains 13 rooms on the upper floor and 13 rooms on the lower floor.

Each room has 15 three-tier beds, highlighting the severe overcrowding of inmates.

Food and sanitary conditions in Wakilabad prison

The prison food is extremely poor and insufficient. Inmates forced to bathe in cold water even in winter and deprived of hot water for showers. As a result, female prisoners often suffer from colds and bone pains. The sanitary facilities are limited, with only 8 toilets available for all female prisoners.

Medical care and facilities are very inadequate, and apart from the medical unit, where medical care and treatment also severely limited, there is nothing available to the female prisoners.

Forced labor of female prisoners

Involuntary tasks such as cleaning quarantine areas, carpet weaving, sewing, and shoemaking are imposed on the inmates. The hours of forced labor are very long, as they are transferred to the designated workshops for mandatory work from 6 a.m. until 4 p.m. Inmates working in shoemaking continue until 10 p.m.

In return for this amount of work, they receive a meager salary each month, and the main profit from the labor of the prisoners goes into the pockets of the chief of Wakilabad prison.

If any prisoner refuses to attend their mandatory work, they deprived of telephone contact with their family.

Communication and visitation restrictions

In Wakilabad prison, political female prisoners are denied any telephone contact. Political prisoners are severely isolated by the orders of the prison chief to prevent them from relating to other inmates. Visit durations are also very limited and brief.

Executions and inhumane treatment

In Wakilabad prison, violence systematically inflicted upon the inmates. They face daily humiliation and degrading treatment by the guards.

In this prison, executing inmates is also a common and routine practice.

Drug entry into the prison

The entry of drugs into the prison is a common issue. Methadone use is prevalent in the prison, and some prisoners visit the prison medical facility to receive it, as methadone is easily available in the prison.

The smuggling of drugs conducted by prison officials under the supervision of the prison chief, with his knowledge. Packages of “nas” traded inside the prison at a price of 400,000 tomans. demonstrate the dire situation and widespread human rights violations in the prisons of the Islamic Republic.

This highlights the necessity for intervention and visits from international human rights organizations and pressure on the dictatorship ruling Iran.
