White torture in the central prison of Karaj, Iran; Mohammad Ashtiani, a 58-year-old political prisoner deprived of bed and medicine
White torture in the central prison of Karaj, Iran; Mohammad Ashtiani, a 58-year-old political prisoner deprived of bed and medicine, and the prison officials have prohibited him receiving essential and vital medicines.
Iranian Human Rights Center, August 30, 2022. Mohammad Ashtiani, a 58-year-old political prisoner who is passing his prison term in Ward 3 of Karaj Central Prison, is under pressure and torture by prison officials.
This prisoner is now, contrary to the law on the segregation of crimes, among the prisoners with social crimes and is sleeping on the floor,it means he does not have a bed to rest.
Physical condition of political prisoner Mohammad Ashtiani under White torture
This 58-year-old prisoner suffers from several diseases, such as heart failure, asthma, lung discomfort, and internal problems, and needs continuous treatment. But in Ward 3 of Karaj Central Prison, due to the crowding and the lack of space in this ward (that is, the inclusion of 650 people in the ward that has a capacity of 300 people) and the lack of air conditioning and proper cooling devices, the condition of this prisoner has worsened.
In this unfavorable physical condition, the prison authorities do not take any action to provide necessary medicines even to solve his breathing problem, and the head of this prison even prevents him accepting the medicines that his family provides at their own expense.
It should be noted that “sleeping floor” refers to prisoners who are not given a bed to rest. These people must sleep on the floor of the room or in the corridor and sometimes even in front of the bathroom door. And when other prisoners want to go to the bathroom, they must pass over their hands and feet or put their dirty slippers on them and pass. Because there is no other way to pass due to the concentration of prisoners. These prisoners also must sleep awake until the morning with the corridor light on.
On May 8, 2022, political prisoner Mohammad Ashtiani was transferred to Ward 3, which is the Ward for Narcotics Prisoners, as a punishment, and has been sleeping on the floor ever since.
Depriving a prisoner of essential and vital drugs is a concrete example of torturing prisoners by depriving them of the right to treatment.
The Iran Human Rights Center considers the protection of the health and life of this political prisoner to be the responsibility of the head of the Karaj prison and the members of the judiciary’s prisons.
