Who Is Mohammad Taghavi Sangdehi? A Political Prisoner Facing Execution

Mohammad Taghavi Sangdehi, a political prisoner in Iran, faces execution for alleged PMOI ties.

Mohammad Taghavi Sangdehi, a 59-year-old graphic designer from Tehran, stands at the center of a dire human rights crisis. Authorities arrested him on February 24, 2024, in Chaldoran, later transferring him to Evin Prison’s Ward 209 and then Ward 4. His story reveals Iran’s ongoing crackdown on dissent.

Background of Mohammad Taghavi Sangdehi

Born in 1966, Mohammad Taghavi Sangdehi holds associate and bachelor’s degrees in graphic design from the University of Tehran. A single man residing in Tehran, he endured multiple arrests in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2020 for his political activities. In 2020, officials detained him for three years in Evin Prison, accusing him of supporting the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK). Released in February 2023, he faced exile in Kohanjan, Kerman Province. However, authorities rearrested him in 2024, intensifying their campaign against him.

Unfair Trial and Death Sentence

On October 6, 2024, Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, led by Judge Iman Afshari, tried Taghavi alongside five others: Vahid Bani-Amerian, Babak Alipour, Pouya Ghobadi, Akbar Daneshvarkar, and Abolhassan Montazer. The court sentenced all six to death on December 1, 2024, for “armed rebellion” (baghi) due to alleged PMOI ties. Additionally, Taghavi received a five-year sentence for collusion against national security and two years of exile. The trial lacked fairness, raising concerns about judicial transparency and human rights violations.
