Vahid Chavaran, a political prisoner, faces 12 years in exile for activism. Learn about his arrest, torture, and hunger strikes in Iran.

Vahid Chavaran, a dedicated political activist, mountaineer, and paragliding instructor from Abdanan, Iran, became a political prisoner after his arrest on July 2, 2023. Authorities detained him while he attempted to leave the country, subjecting him to severe torture. Consequently, Chavaran developed speech and behavioral disorders due to intense psychological and physical pressures. His case highlights the harsh treatment of political prisoners in Iran. This article explores his arrest, hunger strikes, and ongoing struggles.

Vahid Chavaran’s Arrest and Torture

Authorities arrested Vahid Chavaran on July 2, 2023, and transferred him to the Ilam Intelligence Agency detention center. There, he endured brutal torture, which triggered significant health issues, including speech and behavioral disorders. Furthermore, officials denied him access to a lawyer, intensifying his isolation.

Hunger Strikes as Protest

In July and September 2023, Chavaran launched hunger strikes to protest the torture and his unlawful detention. However, prison authorities ignored his demands and banned family visits, further isolating him. These actions demonstrate the extreme measures taken to suppress political activism.

Harsh Sentencing and Exile

In January 2024, Branch 2 of the Ilam Revolutionary Court, led by Judge Rajab Mohammadi, sentenced Chavaran to 12 years in prison and exile to Zahedan. The appeals court upheld this ruling, mandating that he serve his term in isolation without social interaction. Vahid Chavaran’s ordeal underscores the challenges faced by political prisoners in Iran. His resilience, despite torture and exile, inspires continued advocacy for human rights.
