On Wednesday, August 8, 2024, 29 prisoners were executed in Ghezel Hesar and Central Karaj prisons. The identities of some of the executed prisoners are as follows:

  • Shahab Maleki from Harsin
  • Shahriar Foroutan, 38 years old
  • Mohammad Nazari and Esmail Sharafi, both from Kermanshah
  • Omid Farhikhteh and Rasoul Heidari from Tehran
  • Foroud Garavand and Mohammad Gholami from Kouhdasht, Lorestan
  • Abdollah Shahnavazi and Khalil Nahtani from Zahedan

Seven of the prisoners convicted on drug-related charges, and 17 sentenced to death for murder. Four of the prisoners were Afghan nationals.

Mass executions in the prisons of the regime halted for some time due to international pressure. The last mass execution took place on July 13, 2009, during the widespread protests of 2009, intended to create an atmosphere of fear and repression. This mass execution reflects the regime’s need to demonstrate power in the face of the volatile societal climate and to suppress public protests.

Contradiction of the Death Penalty with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as an important international document, guarantees the fundamental rights of all individuals regardless of race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinions, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status.

Article 3 of this declaration explicitly states: “Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person. This right shall not be deprived except by a lawful sentence passed by a competent court following a crime that is recognized by law.”

The death penalty, as the highest form of punishment, directly contradicts this article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, because:

Right to Life: The right to life is considered a fundamental and inalienable right. The death penalty takes away this right.
Irreversibility: Once the death penalty is carried out, any judicial error cannot be rectified.
Torture and Inhumane Treatment: Some methods of executing the death penalty considered torture and inhumane treatment, which itself is in conflict with the provisions of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
