Ilam prison has only one women’s ward and the segregation of crimes not observed in it. All female prisoners kept in the same cell. For this reason, political prisoners kept in the same ward together with ordinary prisoners
According to the Iranian Human Rights Society, based on the reports that came out from inside the Ilam prison, the condition of this prison is deplorable, and the life inside is unbearable and outside the standards of human and international rights.
This so-called new prison is known as Ilam Central Prison. The head of this prison is Hojat Nazarbeigi. He appointed to this position in June 2023, and before him, there was another oppressor named Safdar Fuladi, the head of Ilam prison. The head of prison in Ilam province is also named Ehsani.
The miserable situation in the women’s ward of Ilam prison
Ilam prison has only one women’s ward and there is no segregation of crimes. All female prisoners are kept in the same cell. For this reason, political prisoners kept in the same ward together with ordinary prisoners. The crimes of ordinary prisoners are: murder, transporting and consuming drugs, opening a corruption center, etc.
Keeping political prisoners in the general prison is considered as a form of torture for them, and the prison authorities try to put pressure on the political prisoners by luring ordinary prisoners.
According to one of the prisoners of the central prison of Ilam, the condition of the prisoners during the time of Safdar Fuladi was very serious. A female prisoner who is the sister of a government mullah imprisoned inside the women’s prison. The prison authorities use this woman as a torturer, especially for the torture of women political prisoners. This imprisoned woman puts political prisoners under psychological pressure in exchange for money.
There is a woman in prison who introduces herself as the wife of an informant. She tries to find out about the information of other prisoners by promising to deal with the court case and gaining the trust of the prisoners, and in fact, by spying among the prisoners, she creates a case for them. This situation causes mental and emotional pressures on prisoners, especially those whose case and charges are unclear.
Ilam Prison Store’s Situation
The condition of the Ilam prison store is very deplorable. Prisoners have to do their shopping outside the prison. The prices in the prison store are staggering, for example, a kilo of green pepper in the prison is at least 150 thousand tomans, while outside the prison, the best type of pepper is available for 40 thousand tomans. Prisoners in Ilam prison have to get their needed supplies from visitors during face-to-face visits.
Conditions of health in Ilam Prison
Health care in Ilam prison, like other places, is in a disorderly condition. Due to the strictness of the prison authorities, the medical staff do not give a specific answer to the referrals of sick prisoners. In the hospital, only critically ill patients given 3-4 tablets. The women’s ward does not have a doctor at all. The only treatment staff in this ward is a nurse who does not know much about medical issues.
Previously, the doctor sent to the ward twice a month, but the costs of providing the medicine are on its own responsibility. Currently, GPs and psychiatrists visit the ward, but due to the skyrocketing cost of providing medicine and the financial poverty of prisoners, the visits are practically ineffective.
The health status of the women’s ward is also zero. Shampoos, soaps and hygiene products that should give to prisoners when they enter the prison, delivered to them after a month.
Humiliating behavior of guard officers and accepting bribes from prisoners
The behavior of the guard officer and other prison staff towards prisoners is very humiliating. Many of them deal with the situation of prisoners only by receiving bribes. Guard officers try with unusual strictures, from bribery prisoners to meet their most partial demands.
International organizations, including Amnesty International, have repeatedly protested against the dire conditions of prisoners in Iran’s prisons. They want to address prisoners’ problems and meet their minimum requirements.
