Adoption of a resolution condemning human rights violations in Iran at the United Nations General Assembly
In this resolution, the rulers of Iran demanded to put an end to torture, cruel and inhuman punishments, and forced disappearances of the opponents.
According to the Iranian Human Rights Society, on the evening of Tuesday 28 Azar 1402 (December 19, 2023), the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution condemning the widespread violation of human rights by the ruling leaders of Iran.
This resolution submitted to the Third Committee of the 78th United Nations General Assembly at the suggestion of Canada on November 15, 2023.
Suspicious death of prisoners in Iranian prisons, increased oppression of Iranian women under the pretext of hijab, arbitrary arrests. Also, the poor situation of Afghan immigrants in Iran was one of the issues mentioned in this resolution. In this resolution, the ruling leaders of Iran asked to end torture and cruel and inhumane punishments and forced disappearance of opponents.
Before the approval of this resolution, the representative of the government had condemned it and demanded the elimination of the mission of the special rapporteur and the fact-finding committee.
The bitter reality of human rights in Iran
Javed Rahman, the United Nations special rapporteur for monitoring the human rights situation in Iran, published a report on October 24, 2023. He said in this report that this report has depicted the bitter reality of the human rights situation in Iran.
In this report, he mentioned the violent suppression of protests in Iran and the killing and injuring of protesters. In this report, he also mentions arbitrary arrests and torture of prisoners and long prison terms in order to put pressure on prisoners.
He had previously said in the Third Committee of the United Nations, referring to the suppression of protesters:
“Thirteen months passed since Mahsa Amini killed in the custody of the Irshad Patrol, and the Iranian government has not succeeded in conducting a transparent, impartial and independent investigation in this regard and has continuously denied any wrongdoing on its part.”
He also pointed to the dramatic increase in executions in 2022 and said:
“At least 582 people executed in 2022, of which 256 were drug-related, which significantly higher than in 2021.”

The proposed resolution approved with 78 votes in favor and 30 votes against.
