Parviz Mansouri-Nejad A Lawyer Silenced by Arbitrary Detention

Parviz Mansouri-Nejad, a Tehran lawyer, faces arbitrary detention by IRGC since June 17, 2025. Denied medical care and family contact, his case sparks human rights outcry.

Iran Human Rights Society, Sunday, August 23, 2025 – Parviz Mansouri-Nejad, a 44-year-old lawyer from Ahvaz, endures secret detention since his arrest on June 17, 2025. IRGC Intelligence forces seized him in Tehran, citing vague charges of “spreading falsehoods.” This arbitrary detention, marked by denied medical care and family contact, exemplifies Iran’s escalating crackdown on dissent. His case demands urgent global attention to restore his fundamental rights.

Arrest During a Time of War

IRGC agents arrested Mansouri-Nejad four days after a major conflict began, a period of heightened security measures. Without a judicial warrant, they took him to an undisclosed location. This timing suggests a strategy to silence critics amid turmoil. Consequently, his detention raises alarms about shrinking civic space in Iran.

Denied Medical Care and Family Access

For over 70 days, authorities have withheld information about Mansouri-Nejad’s whereabouts and legal status. His family’s inquiries to judicial and security bodies yield no answers, deepening their distress. His health has deteriorated, yet officials refuse hospital transfers or medical care. This denial violates Iran’s laws and international human rights standards, endangering his life.

Human Rights Activists Sound the Alarm

Parviz Mansouri-Nejad

Activists condemn Mansouri-Nejad’s detention as a flagrant violation of fundamental freedoms. They label it arbitrary, lacking legal basis, and part of a campaign against lawyers and activists. This crackdown stifles dissent and undermines the rule of law. His case highlights a pattern of repression targeting legal professionals.

A Respected Lawyer’s Legacy

Before his arrest, Mansouri-Nejad ran a reputable practice in Ahvaz, handling criminal, family, property, and financial cases. Colleagues praise his dedication, meticulousness, and ethical conduct. Known for defending clients’ rights, his arrest signals increasing pressure on the legal profession and the erosion of the bar association’s independence.

Seizure of Social Media Accounts

The Ministry of Intelligence seized Mansouri-Nejad’s Instagram and Telegram accounts, violating his privacy. This move could manipulate public opinion or fabricate new charges against him or his associates. Such actions further erode trust in Iran’s judicial system.

Legal and Social Implications

Arbitrary arrests of lawyers like Mansouri-Nejad hinder their ability to defend citizens’ rights. This fosters fear and self-censorship within the legal community. Moreover, it risks dismantling public trust in the judicial system and the independence of the legal profession. The denial of family contact and medical care reflects a broader policy of psychological and physical pressure on prisoners.

Call for Immediate Release

Mansouri-Nejad’s family, colleagues, and activists demand his immediate release, arguing his detention lacks legal legitimacy and endangers his life. Civil organizations urge the international community and human rights bodies to pressure Iran to uphold its human rights commitments. His case underscores the need for global solidarity.

Violations of Fundamental Rights

Right to Life and Security: Secret detention and lack of family contact endanger his safety.

  • Prohibition of Inhumane Treatment: Denial of medical care and psychological pressure violate this principle.
  • Prohibition of Arbitrary Detention: Arrest without a valid warrant constitutes arbitrary detention.
  • Right to a Fair Trial: Lack of access to an independent lawyer violates his rights.
  • Protection of Privacy: Seizure of social media accounts breaches his privacy.
  • Freedom of Expression: The charge of “spreading falsehoods” suppresses his free expression.
