Ruhollah Karkhi’s arbitrary arrest in Andimeshk sparks outrage.
Iran Human Rights Society, Wednesday, August 27, 2025- Ruhollah Karkhi, a devoted architect and father from Andimeshk, Iran, faced a shocking arbitrary arrest on August 5, 2025. Security forces detained him without a warrant, leaving his young daughter traumatized and his family in distress. His enforced disappearance underscores Iran’s ongoing human rights violations. Currently, his whereabouts remain unknown, and authorities provide no answers. This article delves into Ruhollah Karkhi’s case, his family’s relentless pursuit of justice, and the broader issue of enforced disappearances in Iran. It highlights the systemic repression targeting justice-seekers and the urgent need for accountability.
Ruhollah Karkhi’s Violent Arrest

On August 5, 2025, plainclothes security forces ambushed Ruhollah Karkhi as he walked with his young daughter in Andimeshk. They showed no warrant and acted with alarming aggression. The terrified child returned home alone, delivering the devastating news of her father’s “abduction.” Consequently, the Karkhi family remains unaware of Ruhollah’s physical condition or location. This incident marks a clear case of enforced disappearance, leaving his wife and two daughters in anguish. The lack of transparency intensifies their fear and uncertainty, highlighting the brutality of such arrests.
A Family Targeted for Seeking Justice
The Karkhi family faces relentless persecution for seeking justice. Ruhollah’s younger brother, Amin Karkhi, born in 1987, suffered a tragic fate. Authorities arrested him during the January 2018 protests, and he died in custody in April 2018, showing visible signs of torture. Security officials claimed his death was a suicide, but his family believes it was a cover-up for murder. Furthermore, two other brothers, Sirus and Kamin Karkhi, remain detained since 2022 under harsh conditions. Ruhollah’s arrest marks the third instance of targeting this family, revealing a pattern of repression against those who demand accountability.
Fruitless Pursuit of Answers
For two weeks following Ruhollah’s arrest, his family tirelessly sought answers. They contacted courts, security agencies, and judicial authorities in Andimeshk, Ahvaz, and Tehran. However, responses were vague or contradictory. Some officials claimed Ruhollah was transferred to Ahvaz, while others suggested Tehran. No authority has taken responsibility for his detention or provided details about his legal or physical status. This lack of accountability deepens the family’s distress. The absence of clear information leaves them grappling with fear and frustration, unsure if Ruhollah is safe or even alive.
Family’s Demand for Transparency

Erfan Karkhi, Ruhollah’s brother, took to social media to voice the family’s anguish: “My brother Ruhollah was abducted without reason or charges. Our inquiries face silence and indifference. When the security system fails, it creates imaginary enemies to hide its flaws. Is my brother, an ordinary citizen seeking basic rights, a threat to national security? Or are security forces fabricating enemies to justify their inefficiencies? We demand transparency and accountability. We call on international human rights organizations to address the plight of detainees in Iran and push for their release.” This powerful statement resonates widely, drawing attention to the repression faced by families seeking justice. It underscores the systemic issues within Iran’s security apparatus.
Enforced Disappearance: A Grave Violation
Ruhollah Karkhi’s case exemplifies enforced disappearance, a severe human rights violation. International law defines this as state agents arresting individuals while refusing to disclose their fate or whereabouts. Authorities deny involvement, leaving families in limbo. Although Iran has not ratified certain international conventions, it remains bound by customary human rights standards. Enforced disappearances violate fundamental principles, including the right to security and recognition before the law. Ruhollah’s case highlights the urgent need for global attention to such abuses in Iran.
Human Rights Violations in Ruhollah Karkhi’s Case
Ruhollah’s detention breaches several international human rights principles:
- Right to Life and Security: Arbitrary arrest without a warrant endangers his safety and well-being.
- Prohibition of Torture: Secret detention increases the risk of mistreatment or torture.
- Freedom from Arbitrary Arrest: Detaining Ruhollah without legal justification violates this right.
- Right to a Fair Trial: Denying access to a lawyer and withholding charges obstructs justice.
- Recognition Before the Law: Enforced disappearance effectively erases his legal existence.
- Protection of Family Life: Withholding information disrupts his family’s security, particularly affecting his young daughters. These violations reflect a broader pattern of disregard for human rights in Iran. The lack of accountability amplifies the suffering of families like the Karkhis.
