Evin prisoners demand the return of female political prisoners from Qarchak Prison, citing inhumane conditions and neglect.

Iran Human Rights Society, Wednesday, October 1, 2025 –Thirty political prisoners in Evin Prison demand the immediate return of female political prisoners from Qarchak Prison, Varamin. They protest the inhumane conditions and neglect that led to Somayeh Rashidi’s tragic death on October 1, 2025. This statement exposes systemic failures in Iran’s prison system, urging swift action to protect lives.

Somayeh Rashidi’s Death Sparks Outrage

The death of Somayeh Rashidi in Qarchak Prison shocked Evin’s political prisoners. They blame judicial authorities and prison officials for neglecting prisoners’ health. Furthermore, they argue that structural inefficiencies and lack of oversight cause recurring deaths. Without policy changes, tragedies will persist. The prisoners demand accountability and reform to prevent further loss of life.

Key Demands to Address Qarchak Prison’s Crisis

Somayeh Rashidi’s death highlights the dire situation in Qarchak Prison. Authorities consistently ignore prisoners’ basic rights, especially those needing medical care. Consequently, lives are lost monthly due to neglect and human rights violations. The thirty signatories demand:

  1. Prosecute those responsible for Rashidi’s death swiftly.
  2. Return female prisoners transferred from Evin to Qarchak after the 2022 attack.
  3. Release all sick prisoners, as Qarchak lacks proper medical facilities.
  4. Equip Qarchak with a clinic to treat ill prisoners effectively.

Moreover, the prisoners warn that silence legitimizes these deaths. They urge the international community to act.

Inhumane Conditions in Qarchak Prison

Qarchak Prison, Varamin; Murder Site for Female Prisoners

Qarchak Prison in Varamin is notorious for its horrific conditions. Human rights reports consistently criticize its unsanitary environment, overcrowding, and lack of medical care. Female political prisoners, transferred after the 2022 Evin Prison attack, face severe hardships. For instance, they endure shortages of clean water, poor food quality, inadequate ventilation, and limited medical access. These conditions violate basic human standards.

Human Rights Violations in Qarchak Prison

Experts confirm that Qarchak Prison’s conditions breach Iran’s international obligations. Key violations include:

  • Right to Life (Article 6, ICCPR): Neglecting medical care leads to preventable deaths.
  • Prohibition of Torture (Article 7, ICCPR): Unsanitary conditions and psychological pressure amount to inhumane treatment.
  • Humane Treatment (Article 10, ICCPR): Qarchak deprives prisoners of basic facilities.

These systemic issues demand urgent attention. The prisoners’ statement emphasizes that Qarchak’s problems affect all inmates, not just one case.

Why Immediate Action Is Critical

The Evin prisoners’ demands focus on saving lives. Returning female political prisoners to Evin, providing medical care, and ending systemic neglect are essential steps. Additionally, independent oversight is crucial to ensure accountability. The international community must pressure Iran to address these violations.

Public attention to Qarchak Prison’s conditions is growing. Human rights organizations amplify the prisoners’ call for reform. Without action, more lives will be lost. The statement serves as a powerful reminder: neglecting prisoners’ rights is a humanitarian crisis that demands global response.

The situation in Qarchak Prison is a humanitarian emergency. The death of Somayeh Rashidi underscores the need for immediate reform. Evin’s political prisoners demand the return of female prisoners, proper medical care, and accountability. Furthermore, they call for global action to address Iran’s prison crisis. By raising awareness, we can push for change and prevent further tragedies in Qarchak Prison.
