Reports from Evin Prison indicate that the limited food ration, the cessation of fruit supply, and the spread of sewage odor in the wards continue; at the same time, Khorin Prison of Varamin is facing water shortage and high prices of goods.
Iran Human Rights Society, Thursday, 19 February 2026 – Reports received from Evin Prison indicate a decrease in the quality and quantity of food and the intensification of hygiene problems. Alongside this situation, Khorin Prison of Varamin is also facing a shortage of facilities and economic pressure on prisoners.
How is the reduction of food ration applied in Evin Prison?
According to the information received, the food in Evin Prison is at a low level in terms of both quality and quantity. Most nights, lentil soup is distributed for dinner. The share of each prisoner from this meal has been announced as only four spoons. The repetition of a fixed and limited meal and the limitation of its quantity have affected the nutritional status of the prisoners. Access to supplementary food items has also been reported as limited. The Evin Prison canteen has not offered fruit this week. It has been announced that some halls have 80 million in debt. The authorities have said that fruit will not be distributed until the debt is paid. The cessation of fruit supply has reduced prisoners’ access to the minimum supplementary food items. This situation, together with the limited ration, has put more pressure on the prisoners.
Poor hygiene conditions and the spread of sewage odor in Evin Prison
In the halls that have been used after the uprising, with the start of rain and snow, an annoying stench is emitted. This odor remains in the space of the halls. The prison guards have described the source of the odor as “garbage.” However, the exact source has not been specified. Reports consider this odor to be related to the sewage of Evin Prison. The emission of odor caused by sewage indicates a problem in the sewage disposal system. This situation has affected the hygienic conditions of Evin Prison.
The spread of bedbugs in the wards of Evin Prison
Reports indicate the widespread presence of bedbugs in the halls of Evin Prison. Even in the cold season of the year, these insects are observed in the wards. The presence of bedbugs has caused constant harassment to the prisoners. This issue, along with the sewage odor and lack of facilities, has made the detention conditions more difficult.
Conditions of Khorin Prison of Varamin; drinking water at personal expense
In Khorin Prison of Varamin, every prisoner must obtain drinking water at their own personal expense. Free drinking water is not provided to prisoners. The prices of goods in the prison canteen have been reported as very high. Many prisoners do not have the ability to purchase food items. The facilities are limited and the quality of food has been described as very poor.
Consequences of the conditions of Evin Prison on the health of prisoners
The combination of food shortage, lack of fruit, emission of sewage odor, and the spread of bedbugs can affect the physical health of prisoners. The reduction in the quality of nutrition and poor hygiene increase the risk of disease outbreak.
Continuous violation of the fundamental rights of prisoners in Evin Prison and Khorin Prison of Varamin
The reported conditions from Evin Prison and Khorin Prison of Varamin indicate a violation of the minimum standards for the detention of prisoners. Food restrictions, poor hygienic conditions, and the requirement to pay for drinking water are in conflict with international human rights obligations.
- Violation of the right to an adequate standard of living – Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: The reduction of food ration and the cessation of fruit supply have restricted prisoners’ access to sufficient and adequate nutrition.
- Violation of the right to health – Article 12 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights: The emission of sewage odor and the spread of bedbugs have put the physical health of prisoners at risk.
- Violation of the right to access safe drinking water – Article 11 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights: The requirement for prisoners to purchase water at their own expense has disrupted equal access to safe water.
