Zinab Jalalian's health crisis deepens in Iran's prisons

Zinab Jalalian faces a dire health crisis after incomplete fibroid surgery in Yazd. Guards force her back to prison, denying care.

Iran Human Rights Society, Friday, October 3, 2025 – Zinab Jalalian’s health crisis deepens in Iran’s prisons. This Kurdish activist endures as the only woman with a life sentence. On October 3, 2025, she underwent fibroid surgery in a Yazd hospital. Yet, authorities dragged her back to prison after just 24 hours. Doctors warned against this move. She needed full recovery time. Now, her condition worsens. Internal bleeding plagues her. Kidney failures loom. Hand pain torments daily. Human rights groups cry foul. They label this torture. Families plead for mercy. However, Tehran ignores calls. Furthermore, this fits a pattern of repression. Political prisoners suffer most. Zinab’s story shocks the world. She resists forced confessions. Treatment remains her right. Yet, guards withhold it. The international community watches closely. Action urges now. Her life hangs by a thread.

Forced Return to Prison After Fibroid Surgery

Zeinab Jalalian: Eighteenth year in prison, deprived of treatment

Zinab Jalalian battles mounting agony. Months of internal bleeding weaken her. Kidney troubles compound the pain. Severe hand cramps strike often. In July 2024, guards rushed her to Yazd Central Prison’s infirmary. Acute pain doubled her over. However, they sent her back quickly. No specialist examined her. Basic fixes offered little relief. Now, skin issues erupt. Boils and lesions spread. Weakness grips her body. Doctors performed the fibroid surgery recently. They stressed full post-op care. Yet, officials ignored advice. They hauled her away after one day. This return endangers everything. Complications brew fast. Chronic problems flare up. Therefore, experts fear irreversible damage. Families learn through leaks. Sources raise alarms. Zinab’s resilience fades under strain. Guards prioritize control over life.

Pressures Mount: Repentance Letters for Medical Access

Authorities twist arms for compliance. In May 2024, Ministry of Intelligence agents visited twice. They cornered Zinab Jalalian in her cell. “Write a repentance letter,” they demanded. Only then would hospital doors open. She stood firm. “Treatment is my human right,” she declared. No deals. This tactic echoed past threats. Back in November 2023, officials issued ultimatums. Refuse remorse? Lose all basics. Healthcare topped the list. Zinab rejected them outright. Furthermore, interrogators ramp up sessions. They promise relief for confessions. She sees through the ploy. Psychological barbs cut deep. Isolation amplifies fear. Yet, her spirit holds. Monitors decry this blackmail. It qualifies as coercion. Therefore, global standards shatter. Families endure torment. Calls go unanswered. Zinab’s defiance inspires. However, costs mount daily. Her health pays the price.

Zinab Jalalian’s Worsening Health Battles

Zinab Jalalian confronts a storm of ailments. Chronic kidney disease drains her strength. Flank pain shoots relentlessly. Skin boils fester untreated. Lesions cover her body. Deprived of scans, she spirals downward. Therapies vanish from reach. Physical toll threatens permanence. Scars loom large. Her family voices urgent pleas. Contacts echo warnings. However, authorities stay silent. No responses come. This neglect borders on harm. Zinab’s body bears 18 years of abuse. Transfers exacerbate woes. Weakness saps her fight. Therefore, observers fear collapse. Experts stress intervention. Time slips away. Her Kurdish roots fuel resolve. Yet, prison grinds it down. Boils signal infection risks. Kidney strain invites failure. Hand pain hinders tasks. The crisis peaks now. Families hold vigils. World attention grows.

Global Outcry: Human Rights Groups Demand Release

Advocates unite against injustice. Twenty-two organizations penned a joint letter. Thirteen defenders signed on. They brand Zinab Jalalian’s plight as torture. Illegal pressures crush her. “Release her immediately,” they insist. No conditions. Freedom calls echo loud. Nine UN Special Rapporteurs weighed in. Their statement blares warnings. Continued lockup spells doom. Medical voids invite harm. “Time runs out,” they stress. Delays court death. This chorus builds pressure. Amnesty amplifies voices. Norway’s Iran Human Rights joins. Furthermore, protests stir worldwide. Rallies demand justice. Social media floods with pleas. Zinab’s case spotlights rot. Political prisoners face erasure. Therefore, coalitions form fast. Petitions surge online. UN sessions spotlight Iran. Guards feel the heat. Yet, Tehran digs in. Families thank supporters. Global solidarity saves lives.

Human Rights Breaches in Zinab Jalalian’s Ordeal

Zeinab Jalalian

Zinab Jalalian’s suffering exposes violations. Article 12 of the ICESCR guarantees health access. Prison bosses trample it. They block vital services. No care for her needs. Article 7 of the ICCPR bans torture. Yet, remorse demands become weapons. Psychological scars run deep. Physical pains amplify. Nelson Mandela Rules demand humane conditions. Post-surgery returns mock them. International norms crumble. Iran signed these pacts. Now, it flouts every one. Furthermore, fair trials? Long forgotten. Confessions under duress taint all. Therefore, justice twists into farce. Monitors document breaches. Reports flood UN desks. Families file complaints. However, responses lag. Zinab embodies the violated. Her Kurdish voice rises. Global courts eye Iran. Sanctions whisper threats. Reform cries grow louder. Breaches fuel outrage. Accountability beckons.

Zinab Jalalian: From Arrest to Enduring Imprisonment

Zinab Jalalian entered the world in 1982. Her birthplace: Dim Qeshlaq village, Maku, West Azerbaijan Province. Life changed on February 26, 2008. Security forces ambushed her on the Kermanshah-Sanandaj road. Beatings rained down. Guns pressed close. They dragged her to Kermanshah’s Naft Square detention center. Torture awaited. Psychological barrages broke minds. Physical assaults scarred bodies. Inmates recall her fainting spells. Interrogators flogged her feet. She couldn’t stand. Yet, they forced marches down corridors. Fresh beatings followed. Later, Sanandaj Prison claimed her. Zinab detailed the horrors. One rape threat sparked fury. An iron rod cracked her skull. Consciousness fled. She awoke to more pain. This marked her entry into hell. Resilience defined her. However, scars lingered deep. Kurdish pride fueled fire. Prison tested every limit.

Sham Trial Leads to Death Sentence and Life Term

Judges rushed to condemn. In November 2008, Branch 1 of Kermanshah Revolutionary Court acted. Judge Moradi presided. No defense lawyer stood by her. They sentenced death by hanging. Venue: Kermanshah Reform Center. Charges flew wild. “Armed actions against the regime.” “Illegal weapons possession.” “Propaganda for foes.” Moharebeh topped it—enmity against God. Appeals followed swiftly. Branch 4 reviewed. Ali-Mohammad Roshani led. Mohammad-Hassan Movahhed advised. They upheld the noose. October 2011 brought a twist. Amnesty commuted it. Life imprisonment replaced death. However, exiles began. Security hounded her. Transfers crisscrossed Iran. Eighteen years piled on. Pressures never eased. Zinab refused to break. Televised pleas? She spurned them. Therefore, isolation deepened. Her trial reeked of bias. Evidence? Fabricated. Confessions? Coerced.

Relentless Transfers and Tortures Over 18 Years

Guards shuttled Zinab Jalalian like cargo. March 2010 saw the first ploy. Kermanshah officials moved her to Evin’s Ward 209. Televised interview loomed. She resisted fiercely. Back to Dieselabad she went. Tortures marked each stop. Handcuffs bit during questions. Leg irons chained steps. Cables whipped foot soles raw. Rape threats echoed in sessions. November 2014 brought surprise. No family notice. Khoy Prison swallowed her. May 1, 2020 shifted her to Qarchak Varamin. Hunger strike weakened her. July 5, 2020: Kerman in solitary. COVID-19 ravaged her first. Condition plummeted. No care came. September 22, 2020 freed her to Kermanshah. November 10, 2020: Yazd called. Phone whispers informed kin. Years blurred in cells. No medical furlough ever. Transfers broke bodies. Zinab endured.

Escalating Demands for Forced Confessions

Interrogators never quit. They craved camera confessions. Televised remorse would seal her “reform.” Zinab said no. Each refusal sparked fury. Pressures intensified. Beatings followed demands. Isolation stretched endlessly. In Dieselabad, they cornered her often. Khoy echoed the script. Qarchak added COVID neglect. Kerman’s solitary amplified dread. Yazd continues the grind. Handcuffed sessions recur. Shackles bind tight. “Confess or suffer,” they growl. She stands unbowed. Furthermore, family arrests loom as threats. Brothers and mother faced cells in 2022. However, leaks pierce veils. Her letters smuggled out. They detail unbroken will. Global advocates amplify. UN rapporteurs cite her case. Confessions remain illusions. Zinab’s truth endures. Prison tests resolve. Yet, she inspires kin. Freedom whispers near.
