“20 suicides in a month in Lakan prison in Rasht, suicide leading to the death of a prisoner.”
A prisoner in Lakan prison in Rasht committed suicide and lost his life.
According to the Iranian Human Rights Society, suicide has become a common occurrence in Lakan prison in Rasht on Wednesday 22th of November, 2023.
According to informed sources, in the Iranian’s month of Aban, 20 prisoners in Lakan prison committed suicide due to existing pressures, and among them, 11 people committed suicide by cutting their veins. On Saturday, November 18th, 2023, also a prisoner named Sohrab Azadbar committed suicide with methadone pills and lost his life at six in the morning.
According to the same source, he sentenced to 20 years in prison on charges of “complicity in kidnapping” and detained for the same accusation 10 years ago.
This source added: “Recently, he was granted permission to take leave. However, Judge Falahi, prison supervisor, increased the bail amount for his leave from 400 million tomans to 3 billion tomans. Sohrab Azadbar, who had struggled to gather 400 million tomans, could not afford the increased bail amount. And committed suicide in protest against the increase in bail and the obstruction of his leave.”
According to the same source. Privileges such as leave, conditional freedom, Aparole, etc. have turned into a market for trade. And also extortion by judicial officials in Lakan Roshan Prison and also prisons in Gilan province. In such a way that if someone wants to use these rights, also must bribe the director of Gilan prisons . Mr. Mohammadi, the supervising judge of the prison, the head of security, and the head of inspection.
