Niloofar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi’s sentencing to prison and additional punishment
“Niloofar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi sentenced to 25 years in prison and additional punishment.”
According to the Iranian Human Rights Society, on Monday,23th of October 2023 , Niloofar Hamedi and also Elaheh Mohammadi, two imprisoned female journalists, sentenced to a total of 25 years in prison by Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran. Yesterday, the Mizan News Agency, affiliated with the Judiciary, announced this news.
According to the verdict issued by Judge Salavati, Ms. Niloofar Hamedi sentenced to 7 years in prison on charges of “collaborating with the hostile government of the United States,” 5 years in prison for “conspiracy and collusion to commit crimes against national security,” and 1 year in prison for “anti-regime propaganda,” for a total of 13 years in prison.
Ms. Elaheh Mohammadi also sentenced to 6 years in prison on charges of “collaborating with the hostile government of the United States, and also” 5 years in prison for “conspiracy and collusion to commit crimes against national security,” and 1 year in prison for “anti-regime propaganda,” for a total of 12 years in prison.
Additional punishment issued against these two journalists
The supplementary punishment issued against these two journalists is a two-year ban on membership in political parties and groups. As well as activity in virtual spaces, media, and press too.
If this verdict is upheld in the appeals court, a seven-year prison sentence will be imposed on Elaheh Mohammadi. And also a seven-year prison sentence on Niloofar Hamedi.
Niloofar Hamedi, a journalist for Shargh newspaper, arrested after publishing a photo of Mahsa Amini on September 21, 2022. Elaheh Mohammadi, also a journalist for Mihan newspaper, traveled to Sanandaj after Mahsa Amini’s murder to report on her funeral. She arrested upon her return. Both journalists currently imprisoned in Evin.
