Water pollution in Karaj Prison, cause of common diseases

According to a reliable source, the water in Karaj Central Prison is highly polluted. This pollution caused diseases among the prisoners, which have irreparable consequences for the prisoners.

The water pollution of Karaj Central Prison and the ban on the entry of clothes put double pressure on prisoners

According to the Iranian Human Rights Society, on Thursday, December 7, 2023. The water pollution of Karaj Central Prison caused the spread of various diseases among the prisoners.

According to a reliable source, the water in Karaj Central Prison highly polluted. This pollution caused diseases among the prisoners, which have irreparable consequences for the prisoners. Lack of medical treatment, lack of sanitary materials and low level of hygiene in this prison increase severity of diseases. Prisoners particularly deprived of medical care and suffer from this.

prisoners not allowed longer to accept clothes sent from their families

According to the same source, in addition, the prison authorities have announced to the prisoners that the prison will no longer accept clothes sent from families. Prisoners must make up for their lack of clothes by buying from the prison store.
Prison authorities only allow prisoners who have been in prison for less than a year to receive clothes from their families.

This is while the clothes in the store are of very low quality and with multiple price compared outside the prison. As usual, the prison authorities want to fill their pockets with the profit from the sale of the clothes needed by the prisoners at several times the price.

It should be noted that in October of this year, about a month ago, we had news about the spread and epidemic of a severe skin disease , similar to scabies. And its spread in this prison, which could also be due to the contamination of the water in Karaj Central Prison. This report indicated that the prison officials did not take any action to fight and control this disease and left the prisoners alone.

Prisoners suffering from this disease have no rest due to constant itching. And in fact the prisoners tortured continuously. The prison authorities prevent drugs from entering the prison. The prison hospital also does not give any drugs or disinfectants to the patients. Disinfectants also sold at multiple prices in the prison store.

Water pollution in central prison, and also not allowing prisoners to get clothes they need and the spread of diseases . All these are clear violations of the most basic rights of prisoner, which can be prosecuted and audited.

About Karaj Central Prison (Karaj Penitentiary)

Karaj Penitentiary (Karaj Central Prison) established and launched in 2003. This prison is actually the 5th phase of GhezelHesar prison, which built in 2003 with the purpose of keeping the arrested and convicted thieves of Tehran province.

From the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011, after the establishment of Alborz province, the penitentiary gradually emptied of the convicts of Tehran province, and gradually the majority of detainees and accused and convicts of the newly established judicial institutions of Alborz province from all classes transferred to this prison. .

This prison considered one of the largest prisons in Alborz province . And is famous for the large-scale executions that take place there. The capacity of the prison is 2,500, but the number of prisoners is more than 8,000.

6 prisoners kept in each solitary cell

The lack of space is one of the serious problems of this prison. On average, at least 100 to 150 people rest in each hall at night in the corridors. And corridors leading to the health service. Between 40 and 50 prisoners housed in rooms with an area of 20 square meters. The density of prisoners is so high that up to 6 prisoners kept in each solitary cell.

There are 18 rooms of 20 meters in each hall and 18 beds in each room. The rest of the prisoners who do not have a room have to live in the yard without any shelter. The creation of any type of canopy will be destroyed by the jailer.

In addition to these cases, the water pollution of Karaj Central Prison is due to the proximity of the water and sewage systems of this prison.
