The execution of defendants involved in drug-related crimes takes place at a time when the people of Iran are generally struggling with poverty. Many of these defendants engage in such activities due to poverty and the inability to meet their daily expenses. On the other hand, the large drug production and distribution networks are controlled by the IRGC.
Due to the widespread poverty and unemployment, many unemployed youth forced to engage in activities such as drug trafficking. While the commanders of the Revolutionary Guards and government officials play a serious role in controlling international drug cartels, these individuals still arrested. In the past three years, there has been a significant increase in drug-related arrests. In the first six months of 2023, at least 205 people executed on charges of drug trafficking.
