According to the Iran Human Rights Society, on Monday, September 2, 2024, political prisoner Amirhossein Moradi, a distinguished student from Sharif University and a political detainee currently held in Evin Prison, wrote from prison:
“Even one day of detention for political prisoners is illegal. I have not requested and will not request a pardon or furlough. It is the regime that should ask the people of Iran for forgiveness.”
The situation described is a significant human rights concern. Amirhossein Moradi, a gifted student from Sharif University, and fellow political prisoner Ali Younesi detained without a warrant and subjected to violence during their arrest. Both held in solitary confinement in Evin Prison, now entering their fourth year of imprisonment. Amirhossein’s statement from prison underscores the illegitimacy of their continued detention, asserting that he will neither seek pardon nor leave, instead insisting that it is the government that owes an apology to the people of Iran.
This case highlights several potential violations of international human rights standards, including those enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), to which Iran is a party. These include the right to a fair trial, freedom from arbitrary detention, and protection from torture and inhumane treatment.
The full text of political prisoner Amirhossein Moradi’s message is as follows:
“Even one day of my detention, along with that of my dearest friend and other political prisoners, is illegal because we have committed no crime; our only ‘offense’ is our desire for freedom.
However, given the scattered rumors and news, I want to state that I have not requested and will not request a pardon or furlough.
I firmly believe that, as a result of the crimes committed—some of which I have witnessed over these years—the day will come when this regime must ask the people of Iran for forgiveness.
The perpetrators and those who ordered these crimes must be accountable for their actions, the least of which is stealing the years of our youth. As far as we are concerned, we neither forgive nor forget.

**Regarding Amirhossein Moradi and Ali Younesi**
Ali Younesi, a computer engineering student, and Amirhossein Moradi, a physics student. Two distinguished students from Sharif University of Technology. On April 11, 2020, they arrested by intelligence agents without a judicial warrant. Their arrest was accompanied by severe physical assault. The two students subsequently transferred to the solitary confinement cells in Ward 209 of Evin Prison.
On the evening of Friday, April 11, after searching their homes and without presenting any judicial warrant. Intelligence agents arrested these two student activists with brutal violence. During the raid, 12 agents from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) attacked Ali Younesi’s house, causing severe injury, including a laceration on his forehead.
Amirhossein Moradi won a silver medal in the National Astronomy Olympiad in 2017. And Ali Younesi won a silver medal in the National Astronomy Olympiad in 2016 and a gold medal in 2017. Additionally, Ali Younesi brought honor to Iran by winning a gold medal at the 12th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics held in China.
On June 26, 2022, after 808 days of holding in closed wards and solitary confinement in Evin Prison. These two distinguished students transferred to the general wards of Evin Prison with heavy sentences of 16 years in prison.
Ali Younesi, along with his father, Mir-Yousef Younesi, is currently imprisoned in Evin Prison. Mir-Yousef Younesi was arrested during the nationwide protests and eventually sentenced to 5 years in prison by Judge Iman Afshari of Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court.
