UN Emphasis on Fundamental Rights of Citizens

The UN Secretary-General’s Spokesperson announced that Antonio Guterres is following developments related to these protests with concern. He called on the UN to respect the right to peaceful protest

Iran Human Rights Society, Monday, January 6, 2026 – In response to the nationwide protests in Iran, Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, called on the leaders of the ruling dictatorship to respect the right to peaceful protest of citizens. This stance was taken while protests have continued in various cities in recent days and reports of deaths and injuries of protesters have been published.

The UN Secretary-General’s Spokesperson announced that Antonio Guterres is following developments related to these protests with concern. According to him, the UN Secretary-General is deeply saddened and saddened by the deaths and injuries of a number of protesters. These statements reflect the concerns of international institutions regarding the current situation and the way in which popular protests are being handled.

UN Emphasis on Fundamental Rights of Citizens

Guterres emphasizes freedom of expression as a core principle. He highlights the right to peaceful assembly too. Authorities must guarantee freedom of association without delay.

These rights form internationally accepted standards. The UN spokesperson clearly stated Guterres’s position. Global attention focuses on Iran’s handling of public demonstrations.

This position is being taken at a time when the recent protests are accompanied by social and economic demands and have spread to different regions. The UN Secretary-General’s response shows that domestic developments have attracted the attention of international institutions.

EU Concerns Over Suppression of Nationwide Protests

The European Union had previously reacted to the suppression of nationwide protests by issuing an official statement. In this statement, the European Union expressed deep concern over the killing of at least 19 protesters by the government’s repressive forces and called for an immediate end to the violence.

The European Union announced that it is closely following reports of deaths and severe violence during the protests. In this position, the use of deadly violence against protesters was explicitly criticized and the need for restraint was emphasized.

The EU’s call for respect for fundamental freedoms

The European Union previously issued a firm official statement. It expressed deep worry over at least 19 protester killings. EU leaders demand an immediate halt to excessive force.

Kaja Kallas, the EU foreign policy chief, reinforced this message. She reminded governments of their duty to citizens. Fundamental freedoms require full protection at all times.
