Official EU statement calls for immediate end to violence, release of detainees, and respect for fundamental rights of citizens

Iran Human Rights Society, Monday, January 5, 2026 – The European Union, in an official statement, expressed deep concern over the suppression of nationwide protests and the killing of at least 19 protesters by the regime’s repressive forces, and called for an immediate halt to violence.

EU position regarding the nationwide protests

The European Union follows reports of deaths closely. EU criticizes lethal violence against protesters explicitly. Protests continue in various cities daily. Kaja Kallas emphasizes authorities’ duty to respect rights. She guarantees freedom of expression fully. Association rights receive full protection too. Peaceful assembly stands as core principle. EU highlights these fundamental values strongly.

Call for the release of protest detainees

EU demands immediate release of peaceful protesters. Detaining citizens for discontent violates commitments. Widespread arrests must end now. Security forces need restraint urgently. Repression deepens crisis further. Violence fails social demands completely.

Background of the protests and the manner of response

The nationwide protests emerged in response to the economic crisis, the sharp decline in the value of the national currency, and the spread of poverty. Protesters expressed their objection to the current situation and demanded a change in conditions. These demonstrations were accompanied by the widespread presence of citizens in various locations.

Reports indicate direct shooting by repressive forces at protesters. According to these reports, at least 19 protesters have lost their lives during the suppression of the protests. There have also been widespread reports of mass arrests of citizens in recent days.

International reaction to the suppression of protests

The European Union’s position reflects the growing concern of the international community regarding the situation of the protests. This reaction follows previous warnings about the escalating violation of human rights. International institutions emphasize the necessity of accountability by the authorities.

The European Union announced that it continues to closely monitor the human rights situation. The institution expects international commitments in the field of fundamental rights to be respected. The killing of protesters has been described as a sign of the deepening human rights crisis.

Consequences of continued suppression of protests

Continued suppression of protests can deepen the gap between the authorities and society even further. The European Union warned that the continuation of violence will have serious consequences. Public trust has been described as one of the main victims of this process.

The killing of protesters has heightened concerns about the safety of citizens. International reactions could add new dimensions to this crisis. The suppression of protests has increasingly drawn global attention.
