Alarming statistic: 2,046 detainees in the period of December 30, 2025 to January 9, 2026

Iran Human Rights Society, Sunday, January 11, 2026 – Field sources and local reports confirm at least 2,046 arrests. These detentions happened during nationwide protests. The protests spread across 80 cities in Iran. The period covers December 30, 2025 until January 9, 2026. Experts believe the real number of detainees stands much higher.

Authorities cracked down heavily on demonstrators. Many families still search for missing relatives. Uncertainty grows every day. Human rights groups demand immediate information.

Cities with the Highest Number of Arrests

Several cities saw especially intense security operations. Yasuj recorded 199 arrests. Security forces detained 201 people in Qom. Bojnurd reported the highest figure with 208 detentions. Izeh faced 119 arrests. Malard saw 63 individuals taken into custody. Varamin counted 65 arrests. Tehran, the capital, registered 167 detentions. Mashhad followed with 81 confirmed cases.

These eight cities alone account for a large share. The numbers show widespread repression. Protests erupted in many regions simultaneously. People demanded basic rights and freedom.

Arrests Spread to Dozens of Other Locations

Smaller cities also experienced heavy crackdowns. Amlash reported several detentions. Khorramabad witnessed targeted arrests. Kuhdasht, Azna, and Kermanshah faced similar actions. Qazvin, Fooladshahr, and Sabzevar joined the list. Sanqar, Shushtar, and Dehloran saw protest-related arrests too.

Dozens of other towns and cities joined the wave. Security operations reached both urban and rural areas. The scale proves the movement’s national character. Citizens from every province raised their voices.

Unknown Detention Locations Raise Serious Concerns

In 126 cases, authorities hide the detention place. Families cannot find their loved ones. Lawyers receive no official information. This secrecy increases fear and anxiety.

Recurring Pattern of Arrests During Protests

Received reports indicate that arrests are mostly carried out according to a similar pattern: telephone or text message summons without presenting a judicial warrant, transfer of individuals to unknown locations, deprivation of immediate access to a lawyer, and severe restrictions on contact with family.

In many cities, families remained uninformed about the location of detainees for days or even weeks. This lack of information has heightened concerns about the physical and mental health of detainees and increased psychological pressure on families.

Importance of Publicizing the Situation of Detainees

Past experience shows that publicizing the names and status of detainees is one of the most effective tools to reduce the risk of human rights violations. Mentioning the name of each detainee in the public sphere increases the cost of extralegal behavior and reduces the likelihood of enforced disappearance.

Continuous and accurate publication of information not only fulfills the community’s right to know, but also enables families to pursue more effective legal action and escape imposed isolation.

Statement Human Rights Violations in the Wave of Arrests in December 2025 – January 2026

The recent widespread and extralegal arrests during protests indicate an institutionalized pattern of violation of citizens’ fundamental rights, especially those of children and teenagers, in dealing with peaceful protests.

  • Article 9 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights — Prohibition of arbitrary detention Arrests without judicial warrant, unofficial summonses, and transfer to unknown locations constitute arbitrary detention and violate principles of fair trial.
  • Article 14 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights — Right to a fair trial Deprivation of detainees from immediate access to a lawyer and delay in informing families violates the right to defense and fair trial.
  • Article 37 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child — Prohibition of detention of children except as a last resort Widespread detention of persons under 18 years of age without observing protective standards constitutes a clear violation of international commitments regarding children’s rights.
  • Article 17 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights — Prohibition of arbitrary interference with privacy Failure to inform families of detainees’ whereabouts and restrictions on contact constitute a violation of the right to privacy and family life.
