According to the Iranian Human Rights Society, on Saturday, December 16, 2023, a prisoner named Hadi Rostami transferred to Fashafoueh prison to have his hand amputated. Hadi Rostami arrested along with 2 other people in a joint case on August 27, 2017 on charges of theft in Urmia city. He forced to confess under torture and these confessions recorded as evidence in his case.
Previously, in a letter to the Director General of Justice of West Azarbaijan province, he mentioned his tortures.
After the arrest of my other accomplice named Mehdi Sharafian and Mehdi Shahivand, I was severely tortured by the officers of the Consciousness Circle, because I have a disability in my left leg, left hip, and left hand. It was excruciating for me to endure the torture. “I was tortured because of some robberies that I did not commit, of which I am completely unaware.”

The transfer of Hadi Rostami from Urmia Prison to Tehran’s Grand Prison (Fashafouye) has increased the possibility that the sentence to cut off his hand may be executed at any moment.
Forced confessions under torture
Before this, Hadi Rostami had written a letter to the Amnesty Commission. He also sent a copy of it to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Iran. He wrote in this letter:
“I, the client Hadi Rostami, son of Nasser, sentenced to amputate four fingers of my right hand and forfeit several billions of assets under case number 100403 at the Criminal Branch of a Justice of West Azarbaijan province. And also I have been in prison for five years. “I subjected to severe physical torture in the intelligence department of several cities, including Urmia, Ardabil and Bandar Anzali.
In his letter, he stated that he was unaware of 20 of the 28 theft cases recorded in his file. He has also announced this issue in the court. But the head of the court has ordered to amputate his 4 fingers regardless of the defense.
In 2020, Hadi Rostami sentenced to 8 months in prison and 60 lashes on charges of disrupting prison order. This prisoner also sentenced to 8 months imprisonment and 45 lashes in March 2022 with the complaint of the inspector of Urmia prison.
Cutting off the fingers of the poor under the rule of the big embezzlers
The execution of the sentence to cut off the hand of this prisoner is implemented while the government leaders have stolen 3.7 billion dollars of people’s wealth in the biggest theft of Iran’s century. The looting of people’s wealth by the government has created the ground for more and more people to become poor. This poverty brings its own reflections such as theft, murder, prostitution, etc. in the society.
Hadi Rostami and all those who are in the prisons of this government are the first victims of looting people’s wealth by the heads of the government and their ministers.
