Iran’s Government Intensifies Executions Amid Domestic and Global Crises to Suppress Dissent

As Iran plunges deeper into economic, social, and geopolitical turmoil, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has resorted to a deadly tactic to maintain control — mass executions. In a chilling three-day spree from April 7 to April 9, 2025, the Islamic Republic executed 22 individuals, including 5 political prisoners and 3 women, across multiple cities, marking one of the bloodiest weeks in recent memory.
Details of the Executions:
The executions took place in prisons located in Mashhad, Ghezel Hesar (Karaj), Shahrud, Gonabad, Dezful, Aligudarz, Bukan, Gonbad-e Kavus, and Kermanshah. This surge in executions widely seen as a regime tactic to instill fear, particularly in response to growing unrest and the looming threat of mass protests.
Since President Masoud Pezeshkian took office in August 2024, at least 995 people executed — a staggering figure that exposes the regime’s increasing reliance on capital punishment to preserve its grip on power.
The Execution of Five Political Prisoners:
On April 8, five political prisoners — Farhad Shakeri, Abdolhakim Gorgij, Abdolrahman Gorgij, Taj Mohammad Khormali, and Malek-Ali Fadaei — were hanged at Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad. They were arrested in 2015, subjected to brutal torture, and coerced into confessions. Despite the legal irregularities in their cases, the regime’s Supreme Court upheld their sentences in August 2024.
These prisoners had previously appealed to the United Nations and other international bodies, detailing the torture they endured and the pressure placed on their families. Their deaths underscore the regime’s utter disregard for international human rights norms.
Executions of Women and Others:
Alongside the political prisoners, three women and several other prisoners — including Amir Ahmad Sani and Mohammadreza Damideh — executed on April 8 in the same prison.
Further executions followed:
April 7 (Dezful, Bukan, Aligudarz): Hamid Abdouli, Seyed Taha Hosseini, Shahram Goudarzi, and Taher Shabani were hanged.
April 9: Eight prisoners executed, including a 20-year-old youth, in various prisons such as Ghezel Hesar. Kermanshah, Shahrud, Gonabad, and Gonbad-e Kavus.

These acts are not about justice; they are tools of terror. The clerical regime aims to crush dissent, silence civil society, and deter public uprisings by showcasing its readiness to kill. These executions reflect systematic abuse of the judicial system and the regime’s growing reliance on violence.
We urge the United Nations, European Union, and all human rights organizations to publicly condemn these executions and demand an immediate halt. Global silence only empowers the regime to escalate its atrocities.
