Meysam and Mojtaba Veysi Killing by IRGC Forces

Meysam and Mojtaba Veysi, two Kurdish Yarsani brothers and cultural activists, were killed at dawn on May 29, 2026 during an operation by IRGC Intelligence forces in Kermanshah province. Local sources say these two brothers had been pursued by security forces following the December 2025 protests and had been living in fear of arrest for months.

Iran Human Rights Society, Friday May 29, 2026 – Meysam and Mojtaba Veysi, two brothers from the followers of the Yarsani faith, lost their lives at dawn on Thursday May 29, 2026 during an attack by IRGC Intelligence forces on their hiding place in the village of Qaleh Kohush. According to published reports, these two brothers who had been pursued by security forces following the nationwide protests of December 2025, were targeted by direct shooting. Human rights sources say that after the killing of Meysam and Mojtaba Veysi, their bodies were transferred by IRGC forces and have not yet been handed over to the family.

Who were Mojtaba Veysi and Meysam Veysi?

Meysam and Mojtaba Veysi were well-known figures in the Yarsani community in Kermanshah province. These two brothers played an active role in the cultural and social activities of the region and were among the founders of the library in Shahrek-e Darreh Drizh (Darreh Drazh) in Kermanshah.

Close relatives of the family say Meysam and Mojtaba Veysi had been present in the field of cultural and social activities for years and held a special position among the youth of the region.

Mojtaba Veysi, in addition to cultural activities, was one of the well-known wrestlers of Kermanshah province and was also active in artistic fields including playing music and painting. Meysam Veysi also participated in the cultural and civic programs of the region alongside his brother. Both brothers were married and each had one young child.

How Did the Operation by IRGC Intelligence Forces Lead to the Killing of These Two Brothers?

Based on published information, Meysam and Mojtaba Veysi had been pursued by security forces since the December 2025 protests. An informed source said that these two brothers had hidden in the village of Qaleh Kohush in Dalahu county to avoid arrest. After their location was identified by IRGC Intelligence forces, a large-scale operation was carried out against their place of residence.

According to this source, IRGC forces targeted the village and the house where Mojtaba Veysi and Meysam Veysi were present, and during this operation both were killed.

So far, no official explanation has been published about the details of the operation, the manner of any possible confrontation, or the reasons for the use of lethal force.

Why Is the Killing of Meysam and Mojtaba Veysi Accompanied by Serious Questions?

Human rights activists say the most important question in this case is why security forces used direct shooting and lethal force instead of arresting these two brothers. According to these activists, Meysam and Mojtaba Veysi had been pursued for months and if the main goal of the security forces was to arrest them, the responsible authorities should explain the necessity of using lethal violence.

Another ambiguity relates to the fate of the bodies of these two brothers. Local sources have reported that after the killing of Meysam and Mojtaba Veysi, IRGC forces transferred their bodies and have so far refused to hand them over to the family. This situation has increased concerns about efforts to keep the details of this case hidden.

What Does the Yarsani Community Say About This Incident?

One of the activists of the Yarsani community stated in an interview with human rights sources that after the December 2025 protests, security pressures in Yarsani-inhabited areas have increased significantly.

According to him, especially in the Darreh Drizh region of Kermanshah, where a large part of the residents are followers of the Yarsani faith, a widespread process of summons, arrests, and security crackdowns has begun.

This civil activist believes that the purpose of these actions has been to create an atmosphere of terror and intimidate the local community and cultural and social activists. He has warned that such an atmosphere can pave the way for violent confrontations and even the physical elimination of pursued individuals.

What Was the Background of Mojtaba Veysi’s Arrest?

Mojtaba Veysi had also been summoned several times before by security institutions.

His last arrest took place on March 5, 2025; at that time, security forces arrested him in Shirin Park in Kermanshah without presenting a judicial warrant and by resorting to violence. According to reports, during the arrest, Mojtaba Veysi’s young daughter was with him and security forces left the child at the scene after arresting the father.

Sources close to the family have said that the reason for his arrest was stated as participation in planning for holding Nowruz ceremonies in Kermanshah. Mojtaba Veysi was temporarily released on March 28, 2025 after about three weeks of detention and posting a 700 million toman bail.

What Conditions Did Mojtaba Veysi Face During Detention?

Based on published information, Mojtaba Veysi was under interrogation during his detention in the Kermanshah Intelligence Administration detention center. Human rights sources say that during his detention he was deprived of access to a chosen lawyer and meeting with family. After the end of interrogations, he was transferred to Dizelabad Prison in Kermanshah.

Human rights activists emphasize that depriving detainees of access to a lawyer and communication with family is an example of violating the principles of fair trial.

Human Rights Violations; Use of Lethal Force and Deprivation of Legal Rights

The killing of Meysam and Mojtaba Veysi has created widespread concerns about the observance of citizens’ fundamental rights and the performance of security forces.

Violated Articles:

  • Violation of the right to life – Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: The use of direct shooting and lethal force against individuals who were the target of pursuit and arrest, without providing a clear explanation about the necessity of this action, has created serious concerns about the violation of the right to life.
  • Violation of the right to freedom and personal security – Article 9 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Long-term security pursuit and arrests without judicial warrant violate the right to freedom and personal security.
  • Violation of the right to fair trial – Article 10 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Depriving Mojtaba Veysi of access to a lawyer and meeting with family during detention violates the principles of fair trial.
  • Violation of family rights – Article 12 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Refusal to hand over the bodies of Mojtaba Veysi and Meysam Veysi to their families and failure to provide clear information about the fate of the corpses is considered a violation of the fundamental rights of families.
