Shooting by the Guards violates the most basic human rights.
The security forces’ shooting at protesters in the 2022 Uprising was only one of many cases of human rights violations by the Islamic Republic. These violent actions showed once again that the regime of the Islamic Republic is ready to commit any crime for its survival. It stated in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights that no one can arbitrarily deprive another of his right to life. Article 6 of the Convention on Prohibition of Torture and Inhumane Punishments also emphasizes: using live bullets and weapons against unarmed protesters is a clear violation of the right to life and human rights.
According to this 900-member list of available evidence, the crimes committed by Iran’s security forces, especially the Guards, are not only violations of Iran’s internal laws, but also gross violations of human rights and crimes against humanity.
IRGC commanders who ordered to shoot protesters or were aware of these actions and did not take action to prevent them, are criminally responsible for the crimes committed by their subordinates and should be tried in criminal courts.
The international community should not remain silent in the face of these crimes and, using all available tools, including sanctions, demand an independent and impartial investigation as well as the prosecution of the perpetrators of these crimes.
