Raid on the Family of Pejman Tobreh Rizi and the Death of His Stepmother

Security forces raided Pejman Tobreh Rizi’s family home, causing his stepmother’s death. Learn about the human rights violations and ongoing pressure in Iran.

Iran Human Rights Society, Saturday, July 19, 2025 – On the night of July 14, 2025, agents from the Ministry of Intelligence stormed the home of Pejman Tobreh Rizi, a 32-year-old political prisoner from Kermanshah. The agents aimed to arrest his younger brother and search for weapons. However, they found no evidence after hours of searching. Instead, they damaged household items and confiscated two mobile phones, leaving the family in distress. This aggressive intrusion created an atmosphere of fear, showcasing the regime’s tactics to silence dissent.

Pejman, currently held in Fashafouyeh Prison, suffers from heart failure. Despite his critical condition, prison authorities deny him medical care. His detention in Evin Prison and ongoing health struggles highlight the harsh treatment of political prisoners in Iran. The raid on his family home adds another layer of torment, targeting not only Pejman but also his loved ones.

Tragic Death of Fariba Ahmadi During the Raid

Fariba Ahmadi, Pejman’s bedridden stepmother, suffered a fatal heart attack during the raid. Already battling cancer, she faced immense stress as armed agents invaded her home and destroyed property. Sources close to the family confirm that the intense fear and chaos triggered her heart attack, leading to her death that same night. This tragedy illustrates how the regime’s actions directly harm vulnerable individuals, violating their right to life.

The raid’s devastating impact on Fariba’s health reveals a pattern of psychological harassment. Families of political prisoners often endure such intimidation, which exacerbates existing health conditions. In this case, the stress from the violent intrusion proved fatal, leaving the family to grieve under oppressive conditions.

Funeral Under Tight Security Control

On July 15, 2025, Fariba Ahmadi’s funeral took place in Bilevar, a suburb of Kermanshah. Family, friends, and acquaintances gathered to mourn, but security forces maintained a heavy presence. They monitored the ceremony to prevent any anti-government slogans, creating a tense atmosphere. Before the funeral, authorities explicitly warned the family against linking Fariba’s death to the raid. They threatened severe repercussions if the family spoke out, further silencing their pursuit of justice.

This control over the funeral underscores the regime’s efforts to suppress the truth. By intimidating the family, security forces aimed to erase accountability for their actions. Such tactics are common in Iran, where dissent is met with swift and severe consequences.

Hospital’s Collusion with Security Forces

After Fariba’s death, her body was taken to Imam Reza Hospital in Kermanshah. Despite the family’s claims that the raid’s stress caused her heart attack, the hospital listed cancer as the sole cause of death. This decision aligned with the Ministry of Intelligence’s narrative, ignoring the traumatic circumstances. The hospital’s compliance highlights a troubling collusion between medical institutions and security forces in Iran.

This misrepresentation denies the family their right to truth and justice. By altering the cause of death, the hospital obstructed accountability for the raid’s consequences. Such actions further erode trust in Iran’s institutions, as families of political prisoners face systemic barriers to justice.

Systematic Pressure on Political Prisoners’ Families

The raid on Pejman Tobreh Rizi’s home is part of a broader pattern of oppression. Across Iran, security forces target families of political prisoners with threats, arrests, and psychological harassment. Pejman’s family has faced continuous restrictions due to his ideological beliefs and civic activities. The death of his stepmother exemplifies how far the regime will go to intimidate dissidents and their loved ones.

These tactics aim to instill fear in society, discouraging dissent by showing that no one is safe. Families endure summons, home searches, and constant surveillance, creating a climate of terror. This systematic pressure violates Iran’s international human rights obligations, including protections against inhumane treatment.

Human Rights Violations in the Raid

The raid on Pejman Tobreh Rizi’s family home constitutes clear violations of fundamental human rights, as outlined in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR):

  • Right to Life (Article 6): Fariba Ahmadi’s death, triggered by the raid’s stress, violates her right to life.
  • Right to Personal Security (Article 9): The unauthorized entry and violent search endangered the family’s safety.
  • Right to Privacy (Article 17): The destruction of property without a warrant infringed on the family’s privacy.
  • Right to Truth and Justice: The hospital’s false report and threats against the family obstruct accountability.

These violations demand urgent attention from international bodies, including the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights. The regime’s actions reflect a blatant disregard for its human rights commitments.
