According to the Human Rights Society of Iran, on Monday, May 6, 2024, political prisoner Mahmoud Mehrabi, imprisoned in Isfahan’s Dastgerd Prison, was sentenced to death on charges of “corruption on earth”. This sentence issued after more than 15 months of uncertainty.

Babak Eslami Farsani, his lawyer, wrote on his X page: “My client Mahmoud Mehrabi sentenced to death by branch 5 of the Revolutionary Court of Isfahan on charges of corruption on earth through an immediate verdict.

The notification of issuing a verdict without attachments, which my colleague became aware of by being present at the branch and studying the case file. Hope that serious flaws in the verdict attract the attention of the Supreme Court”.

Mahmoud Mehrabi was first arrested by security forces on February 1, 2023. After his family’s efforts and posting heavy bail on March 16, 2023, he was released from prison. He was re-arrested shortly after by security forces and transferred to Isfahan’s Dastgerd Prison.

Increase in charges attributed to Mahmoud Mehrabi

The charges attributed include “corruption on earth through spreading lies, anti-regime propaganda in cyberspace, ineffective incitement of military and security forces to neglect their duties and surrender in cyberspace, incitement of people to war and massacre with the intention of disrupting security and insulting Khamenei and Khomeini”.

In January 2023, the second branch of the investigation of the General and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office in Mobarakeh added “publishing criminal content in the media and insulting imams and saints” to the charges attributed to him.
Mahmoud Mehrabi is a graduate of electrical engineering who was working on the Isfahan Mobarakeh urban railway project. He arrested in 2017 after exposing the financial and ethical corruptions of city officials. Mahmoud Mehrabi subjected to physical and mental torture during his detention. He arrested again during the nationwide protests of 2022 and released after a while. However, he re-arrested less than 5 hours later. The interrogator in this case has threatened his life multiple times.

“By sending any information in this regard to us, help us to be the voice of him and all prisoners.”

Currently, more than 50 political prisoners sentenced to death in Iran’s prisons and are facing execution.
