Contradiction of the Death Penalty with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as an important international document, guarantees the fundamental rights of all human beings regardless of race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status.
Article 3 of this declaration clearly states: “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security.” This right should not be deprived except pursuant to a lawful sentence following a fair trial for a serious crime.
The death penalty, as the highest form of punishment, directly contradicts this article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for the following reasons:
- Right to Life: The right to life considered a fundamental and non-derogable right. The death penalty strips individuals of this essential right.
- Irreversibility: Once the death penalty executed, any judicial errors cannot be rectified.
- Torture and Inhumane Treatment: Certain methods of executing the death penalty can amount to torture and inhumane treatment, which violate the provisions of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
