Lack of medical attention and judicial delay in transfer to the hospital
Reports indicate that prior to his death, Karim Reigi suffered severe pain and transferred to the prison infirmary. Nevertheless, due to a deficiency in specialized medical personnel, inadequate medical attention, and delays in the issuance of transfer approval by the supervising judge, he passed away before sending to the hospital.
This incident once again highlights the inadequate medical and healthcare conditions for prisoners in Iran and the negligence of authorities regarding the health status of inmates. The ineffective judicial system and violations of prisoners’ rights
The death of Karim Reigi is another example of neglect of prisoners’ human rights, lack of standard medical facilities in prisons, and the ineffective and unprincipled bureaucratic processes within the Iranian judicial system. In many cases, prisoners lose their lives due to prolonged delays in treatment processes and judicial decision-making.
Human rights activists and organizations advocating for prisoners’ rights have repeatedly warned about the inadequate conditions in Iranian prisons and the lack of access to sufficient medical facilities for prisoners. The death of this inmate further underscores the urgent need to address the health, legal, and judicial status of prisoners, particularly those in uncertain circumstances.
The death of Karim Reigi in Adelabad prison in Shiraz exemplifies injustice and the violation of prisoners’ rights, necessitating immediate attention from responsible and international bodies. Iranian judicial authorities must ensure the provision of necessary standards in medical and healthcare for prisoners, especially for those in a state of uncertainty, to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
