According to the Iranian Human Rights Society, on Wednesday, January 10, the Zahedan Revolutionary Court issued a death sentence for 13 Baloch prisoners. This court has sent the verdicts to the Supreme Court for approval. These people are all imprisoned in Zahedan Central Prison. Due to the rising wave of executions in the country, the risk of execution of these people is high.
The names of 5 prisoners are: Ahmad Gorgij, Mansour Gorgij, Javid Gorgij, Habib Gorgij, and Haji Qader Gorgij.
One of the prisoners, named Sardar Ahmad Gorgij, is from the Sistan and Baluchestan province. He was the commander of a Basij base in Zahedan’s Lar area. In 2018, the Intelligence Protection of the Revolutionary Guards arrested him along with 13 of his forces.
According to local sources, one of the operational commanders of the Revolutionary Guards, named Colonel Poudineh, involved in trafficking drugs. During the arrest of this Revolutionary Guards commander, Ahmad Gorgij and his forces also detained.
It is said that Ahmad Gorgij and his forces arrested for transporting Colonel Poudineh’s belongings without knowing the nature of the cargo.
It is reported that due to torture and harsh prison conditions, Ahmad Gorgij suffering from poor physical and mental health and has developed Alzheimer’s.
Statistics on prisoners and executions in Sistan and Baluchestan
The number of prisoners and executions in Sistan and Baluchestan much higher compared to other parts of Iran. According to statistics published in 2023, Sistan and Baluchestan province had the highest number of executions with 191 executions compared to other provinces of the country. The statistics show that at least 191 Baluch prisoners executed in 2023 alone. This is while the population of Sistan and Baluchestan province is less than 4% of Iran’s population.
