Faezeh Salehabadi; Continuation of Detention of Protesting Artist in Vakilabad Prison of Mashhad and Family's Inability to Provide 4 Billion Toman Bail

Faezeh Salehabadi, protesting artist and mother of two children, has been in detention in Vakilabad Prison of Mashhad since February 2026. Her family says that due to difficult economic conditions and illness of family members, they do not have the ability to provide the determined 4 billion toman bail and the request to reduce the bail has remained unanswered so far

Iran Human Rights Society, Thursday June 11, 2026 – The continuation of the detention of Faezeh Salehabadi, 33-year-old artist and mother of two children, has once again turned the issue of using heavy bails in political and ideological cases into one of the axes of legal and human rights discussion. This citizen of Mashhad has been held in Vakilabad Prison since February 8, 2026 and despite the end of preliminary investigations and sending the case to the Revolutionary Court, no trial session for her case has been held yet. At the same time, her family has announced that due to financial problems and illness of family members, they do not have the possibility to provide the 4 billion toman bail.

How was Faezeh Salehabadi arrested?

Faezeh Salehabadi

According to published reports, security agents on February 8, 2026 by referring to Faezeh Salehabadi’s home arrested her. She after transfer to the Mosalla Women’s Police Station and during the initial interrogation stages, was transferred to Vakilabad Prison of Mashhad.

This prisoner is currently being held in the so-called “Band-e Aramish” section; a section where a number of those arrested in the Dey protests are also present. From the time of arrest until now, she has been waiting for months for the final determination of her case.

What are the charges raised against Faezeh Salehabadi?

Based on the available information, the charges raised against Faezeh Salehabadi include “insulting sacred things”, “insulting the leadership” and “propaganda against the system”.

The family of this prisoner has announced that the basis for forming the case has been her activities on the Instagram social network and some stories published in this space. However, the exact details of the case documents and the evidence raised by the judicial authorities have not been published publicly so far.

According to her husband, Faezeh Salehabadi on April 7, 2026 presented her last defenses and the case was also sent to the Revolutionary Court on May 25, 2026 after the completion of investigations. Despite this, the court session for final handling has not yet been held and the status of the case still remains in limbo.

Why has the 4 billion toman bail become a controversial issue?

The most important issue raised in Faezeh Salehabadi’s case is the determination of a heavy 4 billion toman bail; an amount that her family does not have the ability to provide.

Her husband says the family is in difficult economic conditions. Their 14-year-old child has been struggling with asthma and respiratory problems since childhood and Faezeh Salehabadi’s husband is also suffering from epilepsy. This situation has caused the family to practically not have the possibility to prepare such an amount.

In the past months, requests to reduce the amount of bail have been submitted to the judicial authorities, but so far these requests have not been approved. As a result, the continuation of Faezeh Salehabadi’s detention is more tied to the family’s inability to provide the determined bail rather than the issuance of a conviction sentence.

Legal examination of the case based on domestic laws

Legal ambiguities of the case

In this case, several legal questions are raised; first, despite the end of preliminary investigations and sending the case to the court, why has the trial session not been held in a reasonable time? Second, does the determined amount of bail correspond to the personal conditions of the accused, the type of charges and her family situation or not?

Related legal articles

According to Article 250 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, criminal security orders including bail must be reasoned, justified and proportionate to the importance of the crime, the severity of the punishment, the accused’s record and her personal and social status.

Also, the philosophy of the criminal security order is to guarantee the presence of the accused in the handling stages, not to create punishment before the issuance of a sentence or to deprive the individual of freedom due to financial inability.

Cases of violation of the law

Given that the charges raised against Faezeh Salehabadi are considered related to virtual activities and publishing content on social networks, determining a 4 billion toman bail can face serious ambiguities from the perspective of the principle of proportionality of the security order.

On the other hand, the prolongation of the handling process and the failure to hold the court after the completion of investigations can conflict with the principle of handling in a reasonable time and the rights of the accused.

What impact has the continuation of detention had on Faezeh Salehabadi’s family?

Faezeh Salehabadi, in addition to artistic activity, is the mother of two children and has played an important role in managing family life. The continuation of her detention has imposed heavy psychological and economic pressures on the family.

The illness of the family’s teenage child and her husband’s epilepsy have made the conditions more difficult. Close relatives of this family say that the continuation of detention and the limbo of the case have imposed significant psychological pressure on the family members and have faced their lives with many problems.

Violation of human rights; prolonged detention and use of heavy bails

Faezeh Salehabadi’s case has also created concerns from a human rights perspective. Prolonged detention before the issuance of a sentence, determining a bail beyond the financial ability of the family and delay in judicial handling are among the cases that are criticized by human rights institutions.

Violated articles

Article 9 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Prohibition of arbitrary detention. The continuation of prolonged detention without final handling can conflict with this principle.

Article 10 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: The right to a fair and public trial. Delay in holding the court and determining the status of the case affects this fundamental right.

Article 14 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights: The right to be tried within a reasonable time. The prolongation of the judicial process and the case remaining in limbo is contrary to this principle.

Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Freedom of opinion and expression. Judicial prosecution of citizens due to publishing materials on social networks has always been one of the disputed topics in the field of human rights.

Faezeh Salehabadi’s case continues while her family still hopes that with the reduction of bail or quick determination of the case status, the possibility of freeing this mother of two children and her return to the family will be provided.
