Unprecedented Overcrowding in Vakil Abad Prison in Mashhad

A detainee of the nationwide protests in Mashhad reports widespread arrests, severe overcrowding in Vakilabad Prison, Mashhad, and pressure for forced confessions

Iran Human Rights Society, Thursday, February 12, 2026 – According to information received from one of the detainees of the nationwide protests of 2025-2026 in Mashhad who has recently been released, the number of arrests has been so extensive that many teenagers and young people aged 18 and 19 are being held in Vakil Abad Prison in Mashhad alongside ordinary criminals.

Unprecedented Overcrowding in Vakil Abad Prison in Mashhad

According to this detainee, the wards of Vakil Abad Prison in Mashhad are severely overcrowded with detainees related to the nationwide protests. He says the capacity of the prison wards is completely full, and there is no more space available.

As a result of this overcrowding, detainees from the nationwide protests are being held in the same location as those convicted of ordinary crimes. This situation in Vakil Abad Prison in Mashhad has caused concern among families.

This source adds that the high number of arrests during the nationwide protests has effectively turned Vakil Abad Prison in Mashhad into a place holding a massive number of young people.

Widespread Violations of the Rights of Detainees from the Nationwide Protests in Vakil Abad Prison in Mashhad

Reports concerning Vakil Abad Prison in Mashhad indicate violations of several fundamental human rights principles.

  • Violation of the prohibition of torture: Article 5 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.
