Iran Human Rights Society, Monday, April 13, 2026 – Mir Yousef Younesi, a 73-year-old political prisoner, has been suddenly transferred from Evin Prison to an unknown location; an action that was carried out without informing the family and without giving him the opportunity to collect his personal belongings, and this has increased concerns about his physical condition and the possibility of applying pressure on him.

This transfer was carried out in such a way that he did not even have the opportunity to collect his personal belongings, and so far no information about his place of detention is available. This situation has severely increased the concern of his family and relatives.

Advanced Age and Physical Condition; Concern About Enduring Prison Conditions

Mir Yousef Younesi is 73 years old and according to sources close to the family, his physical condition is such that enduring prison pressures is difficult for him. Keeping elderly people in harsh conditions has always been accompanied by serious concerns about their physical and mental health.

Legal experts and human rights activists emphasize that elderly prisoners require special medical care and appropriate detention conditions; conditions that in many cases are not provided.

History of Arrest and Detention in Harsh Conditions

Mir Yousef Younesi was arrested on January 27, 2023, during the nationwide protests, by plainclothes agents without presenting a judicial warrant at his home in Shahroud. After the arrest, the agents raided his family’s home in Tehran as well and confiscated their personal belongings.

During this operation, reports of inappropriate treatment with family members, including insults and creating psychological pressure, have been published. These events from the very beginning increased concerns about the manner of dealing with this family.

Months in Solitary Confinement and Reports of Torture

According to the published information, Mir Yousef Younesi was held for about three and a half months in solitary confinement cells in wards 209 and 240 of Evin Prison. During this period, he was subjected to long interrogations and reports of applying pressure and violent behaviors against him have been raised.

According to the family, during his detention he was deprived of access to his required medications and was placed under pressure to obtain confessions. These conditions, especially for a person of advanced age, can have serious consequences for his health.

Prolonged Uncertainty in Evin Prison

Mir Yousef Younesi has been in detention for more than three years and four months, and a significant part of this period has been spent in uncertainty. Until the recent transfer, he was being held in ward 7 of Evin Prison.

Prolonged uncertainty is considered one of the serious challenges in similar cases and can impose significant psychological pressure on prisoners.

Transfer to an Unknown Location; a Sign of Applying Pressure?

The sudden and unannounced transfer of Mir Yousef Younesi to an unknown location has been evaluated by some observers as an action aimed at increasing pressure on this prisoner.

In many similar cases, transfer to unknown locations has been accompanied by restrictions on contact with family and lawyer and has been used as one of the tools for applying pressure and psychological torture.

Given his history of solitary confinement and his physical condition, this relocation has increased concerns about the possibility of repeating such conditions.

Family’s Lack of Information and Increased Concerns

The family of Mir Yousef Younesi has announced that they have no information about his place of detention, and this lack of news has imposed severe psychological pressure on them.

In such conditions, failure to inform about the prisoner’s situation is considered one of the main factors of concern for families and can be regarded as a kind of indirect pressure.

Human Rights Violations in Mir Yousef Younesi’s Case

The situation of Mir Yousef Younesi is an example of the violation of several fundamental principles of human rights:

Violation of the prohibition of torture – Article 5 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Long-term solitary confinement and applying pressure to obtain confessions is an example of inhuman treatment.

Violation of freedom and personal security – Article 9 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Arrest without a warrant and transfer to an unknown location indicate arbitrary detention.

Violation of the right to health – Fundamental principles of human rights: Deprivation of medication and keeping an elderly person in unsuitable conditions endangers his health.

Violation of the family’s right to information – Principles of fair trial: Failure to inform about the place of detention violates the rights of the family.

Violation of human dignity – Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Treating an elderly prisoner in such conditions calls his human dignity into question.

In total, the transfer of Mir Yousef Younesi to an unknown location, along with the history of arrest, solitary confinement, and his physical condition, has increased serious concerns about the situation of this political prisoner and has drawn attention to the necessity of transparency and observance of the fundamental rights of prisoners.
