The protesting workers of Agh Dareh are currently facing heavy sentences in the central prison of Urmia
According to the Iranian Human Rights Society, on Friday, August 25, 2023. 30 of the protesting workers of Agh Dareh, after going through process of interrogation and explanation of the charges, subject to heavy sentences. These workers, who arrested in the protest gatherings of the Agh Dareh mine, are currently in the central prison of Urmia.
On August 14, 2023, the Chief Justice of West Azerbaijan announced the issuance of an indictment for 32 of these defendants. The charges against the protesting workers of Agh Dareh have announced as “disturbing the public order” and “acting against the internal security of the country”. And for the release of 26 of them, bails in the amount of 600 million Tomans issued.
On Sunday, July 30, 2023. The people of Agh Dareh village protested over the non-employment of the youth in Agh Dareh gold mine. Then the government armed forces sent from Mahabad city to suppress the people and clashed with the people. Three people from Agh Dareh village named Nasser Bahramian, Hojat Momenzadeh and Armin Nikzad wounded in the shoulder and heart area.
Second attack on Monday, July 31, 2023
In the first hours of the morning on Monday, July 31, 2023, government agents attacked the people and suppressed them. In attack on the people, agents destroyed cars, houses and property of the people and arrested 42 people from the village. Some of the detainees injured during the arrest due to the intensity and violence applied by the officers.
As the second gold mine of the country, this gold mine is located in Takht Suleiman section of Shirmard village. 30 km from Takab city in West Azarbaijan province. Seven and a half tons of gold are harvested from Iran’s gold mines every year. The amount of 6.7 tons is obtained in three mines, Dashkastan, Zarshouran and Agh Dareh.
In May 2016. 17 fired workers sentenced to fines, imprisonment and 30 to 100 lashes on charges of “disturbing public order”.
In April 2017, the flogging of these workers carried out, which met with public reaction and hatred.
