Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is an important international document that guarantees the fundamental and basic rights of all human beings, regardless of race, color, sex, language, religion, political opinion, or any other status such as national or social origin, property, birth, or other conditions.

Article 3 of this declaration explicitly states: “Everyone has the right to life. This right shall be protected by law and shall not be subject to arbitrary deprivation, except in accordance with a final judgment by a competent court in the case of a crime that is punishable by law.”

The Death Penalty as the Highest Punishment is Directly in Conflict with This Article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, for the Following Reasons:

  • Right to Life: The right to life considered a fundamental and inalienable right. The death penalty violates this right by taking away the right to life.
  • Irreversibility: Once the death penalty is carried out, there is no possibility of correcting judicial errors, which makes it irreversible.
  • Torture and Inhuman Treatment: Some methods of carrying out the death penalty are considered torture and inhuman treatment, which is in direct contradiction with the provisions of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
