Masoud Bidarigh, a celebrated athlete from Gilan Province, earned accolades as a provincial boxing champion and secured third place in national competitions. However, his activism and vocal support for political prisoners shifted his path from sports to imprisonment. Consequently, his bold stance against injustice drew severe repercussions from authorities.
Arrest and Imprisonment
In September 2024, security forces arrested Masoud Bidarigh with violence. They subjected him to beatings, insults, and humiliation during the arrest. For a month, he endured interrogation at the intelligence detention center and Lakan Prison in Rasht. In November 2024, a court sentenced him to one year in prison. The charges included “propaganda against the system,” “insulting Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei,” and “disrupting national security.” Furthermore, authorities denied Bidarigh the right to choose his own lawyer, and he rejected all charges. Since May 9, 2025, he has been imprisoned in Lakan Prison, Rasht.
Protest Against Unjust Death Sentences
Bidarigh’s activism intensified security pressures, particularly due to his public protest against the death sentence of a political prisoner. In a widely shared video, Bidarigh stood outside Lakan Prison, holding a photo, and condemned the unjust death sentence. In winter 2024, he protested at the prison’s main entrance, emphasizing that death sentences for political and ideological prisoners violate human rights and dignity. His actions highlighted his commitment to justice, despite the risks.
