Reports received from Minab Prison indicate that Omid Hamzeh, a political prisoner in limbo, has been severely tortured by order of security institutions and by prison officials; an action that according to human rights activists has been carried out with the aim of exerting pressure to obtain forced confessions.
Iran Human Rights Society, Wednesday, May 27, 2026 – Based on reports received by Iran Human Rights Society, Omid Hamzeh, a political prisoner held in Minab Prison, on Sunday, May 24, 2026 was subjected to severe torture. Informed sources say prison officials and torturers, by order of the Ministry of Intelligence, have severely beaten him; to the extent that his shoulder has been dislocated, his neck has suffered serious damage, and part of his lips has been torn. Human rights activists say this type of torture is carried out in many security cases with the aim of breaking the morale of prisoners and obtaining forced confessions.
In what conditions is Omid Hamzeh being held in Minab Prison?
Omid Hamzeh for more than two months has been held in limbo in Minab Prison.
Human rights sources say he during all this time without clear judicial determination and in security conditions has been in detention.
According to these sources, the status of his case is still unclear and his family also does not have accurate information about the judicial process and the charges raised against him.
Human rights activists warn that long-term limbo of political prisoners is itself a type of psychological pressure and a tool of torture.
What items does the report of Omid Hamzeh’s torture include?
Based on received reports, Omid Hamzeh on Sunday, May 24 was subjected to severe beating by prison officials and individuals whom human rights sources have referred to as “prison torturers.”
Informed sources say in the course of this torture, his shoulder has been dislocated, his neck has been severely damaged, and part of his lips has also been torn.
Human rights activists say the severity of the injuries inflicted shows that extensive physical violence has been applied against this prisoner.
According to these activists, the lack of independent oversight over prisons and security detention centers has caused security officials and prison authorities to have practically a free hand in dealing with political prisoners.
Why is torture used in security cases?
Human rights institutions have repeatedly stated that in many political and security cases, torture and psychological pressure are used to obtain forced confessions.
Human rights activists say security interrogators try with beating, threats, solitary confinement, and psychological pressures to force prisoners to accept charges that in many cases they deny.
According to these activists, confessions obtained under torture are later used in the judicial process as evidence against the accused.
They warn that in the absence of independent judicial oversight and free access of prisoners to a lawyer, the ground for repeating this process in prisons and security detention centers has been prepared.
Concern about Omid Hamzeh’s physical condition
Sources close to Omid Hamzeh’s family say his physical condition after torture is worrying.
However, so far no report has been published about his transfer to a medical center or independent medical care.
Human rights activists say depriving injured and tortured prisoners of appropriate treatment is another method of exerting pressure on political prisoners.
According to them, many political prisoners in Iran are only transferred to medical centers when their physical condition has reached a critical stage.
